RESOLUTION NO. 81- t,
WHEREAS, the Texas Legislature, by and through the Sub-
commi ttee on Redis,tricting of the COIllini t.tee of the Whole Senate,
is soliciting information and comments relating to Senatorial
and Congressional redistricting; and
NHEREAS, the tremendous growth occurring in East Harris
County necessitates the need for redistricting in order to pro-
vide the La Porte-Bayshore Area the representation to which it
is entitled; and, .
WHEREAS, the City of La Porte's population'has increased
from 7,148 in 1970 to 16,859 in 1980; and, coupled with the
extensive residential growth in the past decade has been a
corresponding level of commercial and industrial growth; and
NHEREAS, the City Council of the City of La Porte believes
that the growth that has occurred over the past decade, as well
as the expected continuation of such growth, should be recognized;
and,
l~HEREAS, the City Council of the City of La Porte believes
that the most important factor in the redistricting outcome is
that La Porte and the Bayshore Area be included in a Senatorial
District with areas and communities of commonality and undivided
in representation;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL
OF THE CITY OF LA PORTE THAT:
Section 1:
recommends that
Subcommittee on
Senate.
That the City Council of the City of La Porte
the following be seriously considered by the
Redistricting and the Committee on the Whole
A. That the Senate District in which La Porte and the
Bayshore Area shall be located be bounded on the
North by the Houston Ship Channel, on the East by
the Harris County Line, on the South by the Harris
County Line, and on the West by Interstate 45 and
Loop 610.
B. That the Congressional District to be considered in
the same manner as the Senatorial District.
C. That the State Representative District be bounded
on the North by the Houston Ship Channel, on the
East by the Harris County Line, on the West by
Loop 610 a.nd Interstate 45 and continuing South
within such boundaries a sufficient distance to con-
stitute a proper district.
Section 2: That a copy of this Resolution be sent to the
Subcommittee on Redistricting of the Committee of the Whole Senate.
Section 3: This Resolution shall take effect from and after
its passage by the City Council of the City of La Porte.
