HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-2004-18 commitment to the American Dream RESOLUT!O~ . ~()04.lo * * * * A Reso~ution of Commitment to the American Dream WHEREAS, the American dream is rooted in principles offairness, opportunity, and a chance to succeed,' and WHEREAS, the leaders of America's cities and towns are on front line of service delivery and are the level oJ government that citizens look to first to ensure a good quality of life and a bright future,' and WHEREAS, the National League of Cities believes that government at all levels has a responsibility to work together to develop policies and programs that will give every American an opportunity to achieve the American dream; and WHEREAS, a new National League of Cities public opinion survey shows that two-thirds of Americans believe the dream is becoming harder to achieve especially for young families and nearly three-quarters believe government should actively work to help people achieve the American dream. Now therefore be it resolved that the mayor and council of the City of La Porte join the National League 0) Cities in calling for a national commitment to ensure access to the American dream; and Be it further resolved that the mayor and council of the City of La Porte are committed to do our part at the local aluI regional level to maximize' access to ajJordtJble housing, strengthen public education, creafLopportunities to develop marketable job skills, and build an inclusive community; and NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the mayor and council of the City of La Porte, join the National League of Cities in urging state and federal leaders to work with city leaders in the coming year to develop programs and policies that will maximize access to ajJordtJble housing, strengthen public education, create opportunities to develop marketable job skills, and build an incl~ive communities.'
