Description: "Clearing and Grubbing" shall consist of the removal and disposal of trees, stumps, brush, roots, vegetation, logs, rubbish, and other objectionable matter foundin the area designated for clearing and grubbing. 2. Scope ofUnder this item of work the Contractor shall clear the entire right- of-way of all, stumps, brush, roots, vegetation, logs, rubbish and other objectionable matter found in the area, including brick, stone, scrap iron, concrete, shacks, fences, foundations, lumber and all other debris as designated by the Engineer. 3. Preservation of Trees and Brush: The Engineer may designate some trees and brush to be left in place and such trees and brush shall be clearly marked by the Engineer. Trees and brush so designated to remain in place shall be carefully trimmed as directed and shall be protected from scarring, barking, or other injuries during construction. Pruned limbs shall be treated with an approved asphaltic material. 4. Method of Construction: All areas required for embankment construction, roadway, channel and structural excavation, for borrow sites and material sources shall be cleared and grubbed In areas of roadway, channel, and structural excavation, all stumps, roots, eta (except for trees and brush designated to remain in place) shall be removed to a minimum depth of 2 feet below the existing ground surface, except that in areas of embankment in excess of 3 feet the Engineer may permit the trees and stumps to be cut off as close to the natural ground as practicable. All holes remaining after clearing and grubbing shall be filled and compacted with select material to not less than the undisturbed density of the adjacent ground. In areas to be immediately excavated the Engineer may allow the Contractor to proceed with excavation without backfilling the holes. In borrow sites and areas of material sources the stumps, trees, etc. shall be removed to the extent that no objectionable material will be mixed with the material lobe usedin construction. All work performed in areas not designated for clearing and grubbing on the plans, but which will be necessary to clear and/or grub prior to construction will not be paid for under this item of work. This shall be consi dered as subsidiary work pertaining to the various bid items, i.e. storm sewers. 5. Disposal of Material: All cleared and grubbed material shall be disposed of in a manner satisfactory to the Engineer, and burning may be permitted only to the extent that it will not damage adjacent trees, and/or brush or trees and/or brush designated to remain in place. All merchantable timber shall become the property of the Contractor. All material to be disposed of without injury to the Owner or any individual. Paving Notes: 1. Soil Preparation: The top nine (9) inches of the subgrade shall be stabilized with 8% hydrated lime by weight (8% = 54 pounds/SY). The lime stabilized sub -grade shall be stabilized and compacted in accordance with the TxDOT Specification, Item 260, "Lime Treatment for Materials in Place". The soil shall be compacted to a minimum of 95% of Standard Proctor D cnsity. 2. Concrete Paving Paving, curbs, etc. shall be 3,000 psi normal weight concrete with new deformed billet steel reinforcing, size and spacing as detailed and conforming to ASTM A-615, Grade 60. Place reinforcing on chairs to level at minimum of 1 ''/2" below the top of slab. Provide control and expansion joints, as detailed, where shown on plan. Refer to plan for additional notes regarding graving at heavy traffic areas. Site Preparation Notes 1. Strip and scarify the surface soil to a minimum depth of six (6) inches and remove all surface organics, trash, debris, and other deleterious materials. 2. Provide positive drainage by sloping and directing the runoff from the building site. 3. Proof roll the prepared soil to locate any wet or pumping areas and replace with select fill. 4. All fill required shall be a select soil consisting of sandy and/or silty clay free of any organics, trash, or other dcicterious materials with a minimum liquid limit of 26. The plasticity index (Pf) shall range from ten (10) to twenty (20). Stripped and cleaned on -site soil meeting the PI requirement maybe used.
