Broadway, LaPorte, Texas 3 Building Inspection and Findings: The purpose of this inspection was to determine the possible presence of asbestos in building materials expected to be disturbed as a result of renovation activities. Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) regulations require an asbestos inspection prior to the issuance of a building permit and commencement of any renovation activities within a public building. Further, the DSHS regulations also require the filing of a 10 working day notice prior to commencement of any asbestos abatement or demolition activities. The subject property consisted of a one story structure used as retail/commercial space. The suspect materials in the areas expected to be disturbed as a result of renovation activities consisted of wall joint compound and two types/colors/pattems of I'xl' floor tile. The bulk samples were collected at random in quantities sufficient in the opinion of the inspector to determine presence of. asbestos, if any, in each suspect material from the identified homogeneous areas. Sample locations were chosen at the convenience of the inspector, where accessible and from damaged areas (if present) based on the condition at the time of the inspection. The samples were analyzed for asbestos using Polarized Light Microscopy by an EPA approved NVLAP laboratory utilizing EPA Method 600/R-93/116, or 40 CFR, Part 763, Subpart F, as appropriate. The results are consistent with expectations for buildings of this age and type of construction. The laboratory analysis of the bilk samples resulted in no asbestos material in excess of one percent being found in any of the samples. Based on the results of the limited asbestos inspection for the subject property, it appears that the materials represented by sample groups 001, 002, and 003 will not require abatement prior to disturbance by renovation activities. As such, a ten day notice to the Department of State Health Services for abatement and construction/renovation activities will be not required. This inspection report will satisfy the requirements associated with obtaining a building permit from the City of LaPorte. If additional suspect asbestos containing materials are discovered in the course of renovation activities, additional sampling will be required to determine asbestos content, if any. A complete copy of the results of this asbestos survey is required to be maintained on the job site during renovation activities.
