Push -On Joint Pipe page 1 of 9 What is Ductile Iron? Ductile iron is a remarkable engineering material that has replaced gray (cast) iron due to its strength and ductility. Ductile iron is produced by treating low -sulfur molten iron of proper chemical composition, with magnesium. The reaction with magnesium allows the excess; carbon (graphite) present in the iron to form as round nodules or spheres as shown in the electron photomicrograph (right). The nodular graphite, along with the proper heat treatment, allows ductile 'von to have strength characteristics similar to mild steel including excellent tensile strength, impact resistance, and beam strength. These proper- ties along with ductile irons inherent corrosion resistance make it the material of choice for water and wastewater applications - Tensile Strength Pipe made from ductile iron are able to withstand heavy external load -induced stresses caused by earth and heavy truck loads. Internally, ductile iron pipe is subjected to high liquid pres- sutes and water hammer. Ductile iron pipe is manufactured with the following minimum mechanical properties: 60,000 psi tensile strength 42,000 psi yield strength 10% elongation Impact Resistance Ductile iron pipe has the impact resistance to withstand damage caused by improper han- dling, heavy external loading and abnormal service or soil conditions. Ductile imn pipe will excel in these conditions where other pipe materials fail. Bursting Strength The strength and elastic properties of ductile iron pipe provide excellent for high pressure applications. Ductile iron pipe has the added safety to pn hammer. j Beam Strength The inherent ductility and strength characteristics of ductile iron pipe allows it to bend considerably prior to failure. The superior strength and toughness of ductile iron provides a greater margin of safety against service failures due to ground movement and beam loading. These properties provide unique advantages when using ductile iron pipe for applications such as long -span installa- tions on piers or supports. Corrosion Resistance ting strength "SUN 2 7 ?017 ............................................................. Many water utilities in the United States have underground gray iron installations that have served for over a century with some exceeding 150 years. Extensive testing has shown that ductile iron pipe has equal or greater contusion resistance com- pared with grey imn. In most soils, ductile iron pipe requires no corrosion protection. When highly corrosive soil conditions are encountered, ductile iron pipe an easily be protected with polyethylene encasement ... ...... .......... .. ................. Push -On Joint Pipe page 3 of 9 Requirements for Field Cutting Ductile Iron Pipe American Water Works Association (AW WA) standards require all pipe to be factory -gauged on the spigot end only. AD ductile iron pipe have a slight end -to -end taper due to the manufacturing protest. The taper causer the pipe diameter to increase from the spigot towards the bell end. The pipe outside diameter can exceed the maximum allowable.spigot tolerance on other areas of the pipe barrel When a pipe is flOdcut and the diameter at the cut location is above maximum, the spigot will not fit into another pipe bell or fitting. This condition is more apparent with larger pipe sizes. Pipe sires 14' and greater should not be cut unless marked 'FOR FIELD CUT-. Pipe marked 'FOR FIELD CUT' have been factory -gauged to within 24' of the bell and cart be safely cut All other pipe should be measured at the cut location to ensure proper diameter prior to cutting. This can be accomplished with a diameter tape or by sliding an MI gland to the cut location. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES should any pipe be cut within 24' of the face of the bell end (including 'FOR FIELD CUT' pipe). 'Tire diagrams below indicate the allowable conditions for field cutting ductile iron pipe. 3" - 6" Pipe Sizes I 24' Okay to M pipe anywhere on barrel within 2'R of bell Do not out 8" - 12" Pipe Sizes 24- Do not cats thb area wuhout Do not cud wrifyi g pipe diarorm cast Okay to as ttds sea becwam the nidpobu of the pipe band and spigot aid of the pipe Mk%.w 14" - 24" Pipe Sizes 24" Do not an pipe in that area without verirying the 6' Do not cud diameter unless pipe is marked 'FOR FIELD CUT' 30" - 48" Pipe Sizes 24' Do not art pipe in this am without the 8' Do not art dt'n tuar unless pipe is muted -FOR FIELD CUT- Push -On . - page 4 Griffin Push -On Joint Ductile Iron Pipe The MON JODM and FASPPI'E JOINT• designs tncpr ag a single.Iubba "al ng gasket asnnlng a_tight . nent seal The "push -on" type)oint is easy to assemble, and fart to install. Griffin Pipe Products Co. Installation Tips for . Mechanical Joint Pipe Lubrication This Is very important with mechanical joints (pipe and fittings) to ensure a leak -free assembly. Once the gasket is placed over the plain end of the pipe and prior to assembly. the gasket must be lubricated. This step is sometimes omitted because the mechanical joint appears to assem- ble easily without lubricant After tightening of the bolts with no gasket lubrication, the gasket will tend to slowly flow into place with time, resulting in loosening of the bolts from their proper torque. This happens because the gasket has not properly seated due to friction from lack of lubrication. The lubricant allows the gasket to easily and fully 'flow' into'the wedge shaped gasket seat under compression from the gland during the initial assembly. When the bolts are then properly Ughtened.?he gasket will be fully seated in the proper positionand the bolts will remain tight 0 Joint Deflection Mechanical joint pipe should be assembled with little or no deflection of the joint Following assembly, the joint can be deflected as necessary. If the joint is assembled in the deflected condi- tion, the gasket may not be evenly seated and ran also be damaged during assembly. Restraint A common misconception is that mechanical Joint pipe are sometimes thought to be restrained joint pipe bemuse bolts and nuts are involved in their installation. However, the mechanical joint does not provide any restraint Time mechanical joint can only be properly restrained byusing it in conjurttlon with a restraining type connection such as a Griffin BOLT-LOK or MECH-LOK assembly, or with restraining glands. Linings and Coatings for Mechanical Joint -and Flanged-ittings Cement Lining The standard. lining material for ductile iron mechanical joint and flanged fitting is cement -mortar as specified on the ANSUAW WA C 104 A21.4 standard. Cement lining have been used In cast and ductile iron pipelines since their introduction In the 1920's. Ali Griffin ductile iron fittings are supplied with a. cement mortar lining unless otherwise specified by the purchaser. AsphalticSeal Coat c ^. Flttings, tnanufactured by Griffin are supplied with an asphaltic coating covertrig the cement mortar, lining. The seal coat is applied-shortlyaftei the application of the cement lining and helps minimize moisture loss during the hydration of the cement `This auto a controlled cue of the mortar. Additionafiy, it minimizes leaching of the ttment by aggressive waters. Leaching could cause a rise in the pH level of the water. The application of the seal coat is optional unless otherwise specified. While Y cement linings can normally tolerate service temperatures up to the boiling point of water, seal -coated lining should not exceed 1507 due to the softening point of the seal coat Asphaltic Lining If requestedby the pumhas'1. Griffin can supply fitting with a minimum I -mil thick asphaltic lining in lieu of the standard cement lining. Temperature exposure limit is 1507 for asphaltic lining. Unlined Griffin can supply unlined fitting for special applications that may require non-standard or specialty lining materials.. Specialty Linings Customers may request special linings not normally supplied by Griffin Such linings might include fusion -bonded epoxy, Type V sulphate -resisting cement. glass or polyurethane among others. Prior to the introductt `u- gal casting, and the adoption of standardized dimensions in the waterworks industry, pipe were produced by "pit casting 'meth- ods. Pit met pipe had a larger diameter (OD) than currently manufactured ductile Iron pipe. While the older type of pipe Is no longer manufactured, It is sometimes necessary to connect a new ductile iron pipe or fitting to the older lines. The Griffin Duo -Sleeve is designed with a larger Inner diameter for use on older pipelines of cast iron with oveisizeddiameters (O.D.). The Duo -Sleeve allows cutting into and adapting to the older pipelines with newer ductile iron pipe, fittings or vahv . The current C153 compact mechanical Joint ductile iron sleeves will not adapt to the oversize cast iron pipe. The DuowSleeve has larger dimensions in the gasket/gland area and will fit oversize pipe as well as new ductile iron pipe. The Duo -Sleeve requires the use of a special Duo -Gland that is supplied with each Duo -Sleeve. The gasket is the current C111 mechanical Joint gasket (gasket not supplied with the fitting). If the tapped hole required is too large to be accommodated by the standard fitting wall thickness, an integrally cast boss may be required to provide the neces- sary thickness for tapping. In addition, it may, be necessary to integrally cut a flanged boss to accommodate larger sized holes that are impractical to thread. In this case a boa the size of a flange shall be integrally cast. The hole shall be cored or drilled at the manufactvms option. The flange boa shall be faced and bolt holes will be drilled and tapped. The bolt holes shall be blind tapped as to not interfere with the fitting wall thickness. ivorn -ri°errea ,45 PTp Coraxaiioxx ' ` i Product Description: AW WA C-900 Municipal Water Pipe North American Pipe's AVJWA G9D0 PVC product line is manufactured to meet the needs of modem municipal water distnbution systems.
