Uniting in brotherhood, the Eagles fought to make necessary sociat change. The Eagles initiated Mothers Day as a national holiday. The Eagles sponsored America's first workers' compensation law and provided the impetus for Social Security. They also inaugurated nationwide ")obs after 40" to end job discrimination based on age. Today, the Fraternal Order of Eagles is proud of its many charities. The Eaglet Max Baer Heart Fund has raised millions of dollars for research and education in hopes of eliminating heart disease, The Eagles and the Heart Fund have been responsible for teaching C.P.R, to people across North America, and for teaching our youth about drug abuse, awareness and prevention. The boundary of the Heart Fund was expanded in 1978 when medical science learned how often diabetes is associated with heart disease. It was then that the Eagles' RobertW. Hansen Diabetes Ftmd was initiated In the 1998-1999 fraternal year alone, the Eagles gave over $127,500.00 in grants to research and education in the fight ~ainst diabetes. The Eaglea'ArtEhrmannCancerFund has contributed over $20.5 million to universities, hospitals and other institutions with the hope of finding a cure for this devastating disease. Many grants through the fund are awarded to area hospices to give aid to terminally ill cancer patients. The Eagles' D.D.DunlapKldnteyFond, established in 1978, has raised over $4 million to fight kidney disease. To make certain that the grants will be awarded where they are most needed and will do the most good, the Eagles have enlisted the aid of America's leadingmedical experts to counsel in this area. The Eagles' Jimmy Durante Children's Farad was established to treat and care for mentally or physically challenged children under the age of 18. It was later expanded to help prevent child abuse. 19ie Eagles' Memorial Foundation gives aid to the children of Eagle members that are military personnel, prison guards, law enforcement officers, fire fighters and E.M.S. officers who have given their lives in the line of duty. This includes all volunteers of these public service units. Aid to these children includes educational, medical, surgical, hospital, dental and optical. The children of these valiant officers are eligible for funds up to their 25th birthday providing they remain full-tune students. 'li lie lEagfles' Q~ofl~len Eagle -A-~aeianer's Famd supports Alzheimer's research centers. The Golden Eagle Furrd~sapports senior atizens programs such as Meals on Wheels. Also through the Golden Eagles Fund are: 1) the Virginia Turner Memorial Library Grant program which supplies large print and audio books to libraries that cater to seniors; 2) the G.R.E.A.T. Fund to support local police in "Gang Resistance Education And Training' ; 3) The H.O.M.E. Fund, "Hands Of Many Eagles" which supports various causes not already provided for by the other Eagle charity funds. Throughout the history of Eagledom we have been "People Helping People:' We have lobbied in Congress to assure that the rights of our neighbors and communities are addressed We have raised millions of dollars for research and education to some day find cures for some of the most devastating diseases of our time. It is with the Eagles' "kcenness of vision" that we have become 1.2 million members strong, and it is as Eagles we rise on powerful wings and take flight into this new millennium.
