Friday, March 13, 2020 and Extension of Disaster Declaration
SUMMARY
On March 13, 2020, the Mayor for the City of La Porte signed a Declaration of Disaster
related to the pandemic flu outbreak or other health emergency resulting from COVID-
19 (novel coronavirus). Pursuant to Texas Local Government Code 418.108(a) a local
state of disaster may be declared. However, 418.108(b) states that the state of disaster
shall only continue for a period of not more than seven days from the date of that
declaration unless continued or renewed by the governing body.
In order to continue or renew the original Declaration of Disaster, an Extension of
Disaster Declaration needs to be approved by City of La Porte City Council. The
attached Extension of Disaster Declaration shall continue until terminated by executive
order of the Mayor or the governing body of La Porte. The Extension of Disaster
Declaration shall become effective on March 20, 2020.
RECOMMENDED MOTION
Approve an Extension of Disaster Declaration issued by the Mayor on March 13, 2020
and any orders, rules, and regulations issued by the Mayor pursuant thereto.

EXTENSION OF DISASTER DECLARATION
WHEREAS, on March 3, 2020, the Mayorofthe Cityof La Porte,Texas issued a
proclamation declaring a state of disaster for the City of La Porte, Texas, resulting from
COVID-19 (novel coronavirus).
WHEREAS, the conditions necessitating declaration of a state of disaster continue to exist; and
WHEREAS, §418.108(b) of the Texas Government Code provides that a local state of disaster
may not be continued for a period of excess of seven days without the consent of the governing
body of the political subdivision;
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT ORDAINED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF LA
PORTE, TEXAS:
1.That the state of disaster proclaimed for the City of La Porte, Texas, by the
Mayor on March 13, 2020, shall continue until terminated by executive order of the Mayor or
by the governing body of the political subdivision.
2.This is passed as an emergency measure and pursuant to Sec. 26-3 of
the La Porte Code of Ordinances and shall become effective on the 20th day of March, 2020.
