RE: 2010 La Porte Census Data - Initial Report
City Staff recently obtained and mapped the U.S. Census Bureau's 2010 block -level data for
La Porte, which shows a 6% increase in population over the last ten years; from 31,880 in
2000 to 33,800 in 2010. Based on this data, the "ideal" population for each of La Porte's six
council districts is 5,633.
Initial review of La Porte's 2010 census blocks shows that four of the census blocks (Block
1000, Block 1011, Block 1767, and Block 2000) are divided between 2 or more council
district boundaries, thereby making an accurate population tally difficult to determine for all
districts except District 2, which contains no "split census blocks".
In a preliminary effort to address this "split census block" issue, Staff has attempted to re-
calculate the population of each affected district by subtracting the total population of the
"split census block" from its respective district, estimating the number of occupied housing
units from the "split census block" located within the district's boundary, then multiplying
the average number of persons per occupied household to the estimated number of
occupied housing units in that district. The resulting population estimates for Districts 1, 3,
4, 5, and 6 are shown in the table below.
Please note that these initial population estimates (identified with an asterisk) do not
represent a final population figure for the district. The City's Redistricting Committee will
determine the most effective method for ascertaining the final population of each of these
affected districts.
Attached is a 2010 Census Block Map including current council district boundaries and a
flash drive containing La Porte's census block data for your reference.
