Agge, P.L. Benson, J.J. Roark,Fred R. Ruff. Minutes of the last regular meeting on February lla. and special xeetings on February 20, 21 and 26 were read. and approved. - Ho.L•Ps P The Mayor presented a letter fror. the Houston Lighting and Power Co. check together with their check No.252~~5 in the amount of X391.36 represent- ing the proportion of net earnings alloted to the City of La Porte by the Houston Lighting & Power Co. for the year 1937. Ald. Agee offered a motion, second by Ruff, that the City Council ac- cept the check and write a letter of ackn~7.edgement and appreciation to the Coxpany for sane. Carried Burroughs Motion by Agee second by Benson, that a warrant be drawn in favor of the Burroughs Adding Machine Co. in the amount of X22.32, being the amount of the payment due on the new adding machine Mash lst,1938• Shabi The City Secretary reported that the ratter of ad~ustxent of taxes on car~cel- certain lots owned by Jos.P. Shabi had been presented to the Tax Coya- latien xittee. The value of the lots referred to had been erroneously set up on the Tax Roll for the year 193~.and upon the recoxmendation by the Tax Coxmtittee Ald. Roark made a xotion, second by Ruff, that the Tax C lleotor be authorized to cancel taxes in the amount of $1.50 on Lots 2~ to 28, Block 982, La Porte, assessed in the name of Jos. E. Shabi for the year 193l~. Carried Election The Mayor read the following order for calling an election: order Be it ordered by the Mayor and CitSr Council of La Porte, Texas, that .the anr_ual election be held at the City Ha11 Building in said City of La Porte, on the 5th day of April, 1938 for the purpose of electing the Mayor, two x~embers of the Board of Aldermen, the City Secretary and Treasurer and the City Marshall of said City. It is further ordered that said election be held:'' in the ~~nt:.er, prbscrl3ed by..°law for holding such elections. It is further ordered that the returns of such elec- tion be delivered to the City Council of said City, in open session, as soon as practicable after the closing of the polls. It is further or- dered that proper xiotice of such election be published in the official newspaper. P:~otion by Agee, second by Ruff , that the order as read be passed. Carried. Alderman Ruff announced that the City had asked for bids on 2" galy- anized steel pipe and asked that the bids be opened at this tire. over 2 • Bids The bids on 2" galvanized steel pipe having Seen opened they were tabu- 2" pipe fated as follows= TJunlay-Ars~and ~; Co. X21.2.5 perC fob La Porte I~~otion by Benson, second by Roark, that the contract for f~pproximately 800 feet of 2" galvanized steel pipe be given to N.O. Nelson Co. on their low bid of ~21~00 per 100 feet, proviating this is f.o.b. La Porte, if not that La Porte Hardware Co., the next low bidder be given the contract. Carried. T.;Zesse~s E.L. Clark, N.n. Gilliam, ~'d.S. Lewis, ~ H.'". Cole, appeared before the Council in the interest of the. installation of the 2" line to feed the line known as the E.I). Clark line, according to contract. Alderman Ruff explained the plan of the City to install this line as soon as the pipe could be delivered. The Gayle City Attorney presented a number of letters with reference to the suit of Bros Gayle Bros. vs the City of La Porte. He also presented letters in regard to the suit of^.T. Baldwin against the City, one of which from '"i.I~~S. Streetman asked authority to employ tyro ®xpert witnesses. T,Zotion by Ruff, second by Roark, that !"~t.r;?. 5treetman be authorized to em- ploy two expert witnesses in the Baldwin Cass. Carried :ewer Alderman Benson presented the matter of the condition of the sewer lifts Lifts especially lift Tdo.2 and after lengthy discussion a motion was offered by Ald. Ruff, second by Roark that the matter of relieving the situation at lift plant No.2 be turned over to the Sewer Comrnittoe to get estimates on the cost of laying a line and the cost of pipe, this to be submitted to the Council at the next regular meeting.
