Meeting was called to order by Mayor Sharp with the following Ald-
ermen present: F.R. Boyle, J.J. Roark, Fred R. Ruff.

Minutes of the last meeting were read and approved.
Motion by Ruff, second byc Roark, that bills in the amount of X404.53

The City Secretary reported that the note of X500.00, owed by the
City tro the First National Bank of La Porte, and due Aug. 9,1939,
had boen renewed for .90 days and interest to due date , in the
amount of X7.50, had been paid.

Budget Motion by Boyle, second by Ruff, that the following resolution be
adopted:
1~fiEREAS, heretofore, the I~dayor of the City cif La Porte
'~~~:':~' prepared and submitted to the City Council, at Sts regular meeting
held on July 10,1939, his proposed budget for the fiscal year,
April 1,1939 to March 31,191.0; and ,

~'IFIEREAB, the City Council. filed such proposed budget c~rith the
Clerk of the City on the 10th day of July,l939, and designated that
a public hearing on such budget be held at the City Ha11 at 8:00 P.P~i.
_ on August l1~.,1939, and caused public notice of such hearing to be made;
and,
~dHEREAS, such public hearing has been held, it is therefore
ordered by the Council that the budget, as prepared and submitted by_
the Pdayor, is hereby finally approved by the City Council and i~t is
r hereby ordered that a true copy. of such approved budget, together with
a copy of this order, shall be filed in each of the offices of the
Clerk of the City of La Po rte, the County Clerk of Harris County,Texas
and the State Comptroller, at Austin, Texa3• -

Bonds Alderman Ruff presented a letter .from Rauscher, Pierce & Co.
offering ~1a.,000 in City of La Porte Refunding Bonds due 1960/63

Correspondence The City Secretary read a letter from the. Texas Company asking to
be advised if the City of La Porte anticipated adopting by ordi-
Hance or resolution, any provision for tax discounts under S.B.
. No. ?~02. recently adopted by the leg~.slaturo. The Council in-
struc~ed the Secretary to write the texas Company that the City
was not contemplating such action at this time and in the event
it was taken the Company would be notified.
H.L.P. bill _ The .City Secretary was instructed by the Council to hold up the
payment of the Houston Lighting & Power Co. bill for July and to
make inquiry as to whether or nod the City is entitled to a discount
on lig~at and power bills beginning July lst,1939•
Fire Scoot The mayor reported that Chas.J. ~'filson, who attended the annual
Grade Fire School at College Station, representing the La Porte Volunteer
Fire Dept. of La Porte, made a grade of 9I.~ and had a perfect at-
tendance record.
Additional :'red Hartman appeared before_ the Council, representing a Committee
Appropriation from the La Porte Volunteer Fire Department who asked if the Council
might consider making some additional appropriation for the repre-

sentative of i;he City and the La Porte Volunteer Fire Dept. at
~y the Fire School at College Station, July 17th to 21st, since
~'?~ that amount of time was lost from his regular work.
^.R. Boyle, Chairman of the Fire Committee, analyzed the expenses
necessary in attending the School and pointed out that the annual
appropriation of X35.00 per man appeared to be adequate. There
was some discussion of the matter but no action vfras taken by the
Council at this time.
inhere being no further business to come before the meeting, on
motion by Roark and carried by those present the Council took
adjournment.
