Meeting was called to order by Mayor Sharp, with the following Alder-
men present: C.It2. Agee, P.L. Benson, ^. F:. Boyle, J.J. Roark, F.R. Ruff.

Oath of
o:Pfice A}~e~~r J.J. Roark was sworn in as Alderman to serve for two years.
Cemetery r,':rs E.F. Seammen and Mrs l~V.Pd. Casteel appeared before the City Council
in the interest of the maintenance of the La Porte Cemetery, explaining
that the organization of women who had been responsible for it were no
longer able to carry on this work. P~~rs Seammen suggested that the cem-
etery mig~t be deeded to the City who would then be responsible for the
upkeep. The Council, after discussion, instructed the City Attorney to
ascertain and report at the next Council meeting if such action could be
taken.
~NPA The City Secretary presented a letter from County Commissioner R.E. Tur-
Resolution rentine to which was attached a resolution and ordinance on County ~:WPA
maintenance of City and County streets. i..~r Turrentine asked that if the
-ity wished to participate, the Council pass the resolution and ordinance
and foravard copies to his office. Motion by Agee, second by Benson, that
pdfiEREAS, House Bill 282, known as the Special Harris County Road Law,
passed at the 33rd Regular Session of the State Legislature of the State
of Texas in Sections 29 and 33, clearly defines the rights of Harris County-
to engage in road improvement work inside or outside the corporate limits
of any incorporated city or town in Harris County;and
WHEREAS, certain streets of this municipality are a part of the Barris
County maintained road system and are subject to all of the conditions
in the aforesaid act; and
?'VHEREAS, the Works Progress Administration, commonly known as ~+IPA, de-
sires to have specific acknowledgement from this City Council,recog-
nizing the rights of Harris C unty as set out in the law above referred
to;
Plow therefore be it resolved and ordained by the City Council of the City
of La Porte, Texas, that this municipality recognizes the right of
Harris County to engage in road improvement work on any or all of the
streets of this mtitnicipality and further freely grants, and in no way
contests the rights necessary for the County to engage in such im-
provements.

Audit The City Secretary presented the Audit report of Learned 8. Tapp &
Freeze on the City boors for the fiscal near of 1939-.TO and the
audit of the Firemen's Relief ,~c Retirement Fund from j:~sy 1937 to
`~~arch 31,19I~.0, together with a bill from this firm of ?135.00,
being ~~p125.00 for audit of regular books and `10.00 for audit of
Firemen's Fund books, which were not included in proposal for audit.
P,".otion by Ruff., second by Benson, that the Audit of Learned, Tapp c~
Freeze, be accepted and the bill of X135.00 be ordered paid.

'dPA Sewing The City Secretary presented a letter from the La Porte Relief Com-
mittee, together with copies of letters written by the Committee to
$OOm Commissioner Turrentine and Representative Thomas, protesting the
closing of the `s~~PA Sewing Room in La Porte and asking that the City
~:~ouncil lend its su ornn~~ ~n avi{?g the project re-opened.
I14otion by Benson~tfia'~°t~ie ~i~y°a~~orney be instructed to write letters
on this matter to Commissioner Turrentine and Representative Thomas
registering the City's prod'test on the closing of the project.

Telephone .Alderman Ruff brought up the matter of the lack of telephone repair
Repair service in La Porte on Sundays and holidays and asked that the City
uervice Council lodge a protest with the Southwestern Bell Telephone Co.
The City Secretary was instructed to write the Telephone Go. in re-
Bard to this matter.
::ewer Bond The City Secretary presented City of La Porte Sewer Funding Bond No.
No.2 2, which had been paid and cancelled. Lotion by Ruff, second by
Benson, that City of La Porte Sewer Funding Bond No.2, dated Paiay 10th,
1938, in the principal sum of Five Hundred Dollars, X500.00) and due
April lOth,191~.0, be turned over to the P47ayor and City Secretary, to be
destroyed by fire in the presence of the City Council and that proper
affidavit of this action be presented at the next pity Council meeting.

Fire ~.`otion by Ruff, seaond by Roark, that the City Attorney be instructed
~~arshall to write the State Fire Insurance Commission, asking whether a full
time fireman can also act as City Fire ~'tarshall.
Carried.

La Forte l~~TOtion by Ruff', aecond by Benson, that the "4jayor be authorized to
Dsy declare April 30th,19l~0, La Porte Day, a half Holiday and that the
City Office be closed at noon on that day.
Carried.
Business being completed, on motion. by Agee and carried by those
present tkie meeting was adjourned.
