Meeting was called to order by Mayor Ruff with the following Aldermen and City Officials present: Ald. J. N. Johnson, George F. Norris, J. J. Roark, J. L. Dunham, T. F. Smith, City Atty Jno. S. Kiibler, City Secretary Sharp. Minutes of the last meeting were read and approved. The Mayor presented an affidavit on the burning of the following City of La Porte Warrants, City of La Porte Water System Warrants Numbers 1 to 22 inclusive, each in the principal sum of $1,000,00 with interest coupons at- tached and Numbers 23, 24 and 25 which were not issued, each in the principal sum of $1,000,00 with interest.cou- pons attached-, each of said Warrants being dated Otcober 10th, 1945. Motion by Roark, second by Smith, that Warrants Nos. 9194 to 9246 inclusive for current bills and payroll be ratified. Carried. The City Seeretary�presented a check in the amount of $323,41 from the Southwestern Bell Telephone Company in payment of gross receipts tax due the City of La Porte for the year 1946. .� Motion by Johnson, second by Smith, that this check be accepted and an official receipt be issued to the South- western Bell Telephone Company, Carried. The Mayor presented the Corporation Court Report from January 1st to April 4th, 1947. Motion by Roark, second by Smith, that the Corporation Court Report as presented by the Mayor be accepted and Mayor's fees paid. Carried. Motion by Johnson, second by Smith, that the City Council ratify the exchange of that certain $1,000.00 Grimes County, Texas, 5 Special Road Bond Series D, No. 811, due April 10, 1945 at First National Bank, put up as collateral ex- changed for one $1,000,00 Lower Neches Valley Authority 2 Water Revenue Bond, No. A971, due January 15, 1945 and further that the release of the old Trust Receipt signed by the National Bank of Commerce of Houston, Texas, be ratified. Carried. The Mayor asked that the returns of the City Election held on April 1, 1947, be canvassed. The election returns were canvassed as follows: I 439 For or against closing First avenue.between Block #219 and #220: For 377 votes Against 143 votes The Mayor declared the election for closing First Avenue be- tween Block #219 and #220 carried. For electing three aldermen: T. F. Smith 210 votes George B. Crate 324 votes James E..Stewart 312 votes Bryan Moore 268 votes Jesse J. Roark 230 votes J. N. Johnson 5 votes The Mayor declared George B. Crate, James E. Stewart, Bryan Moore the candidates receiving the highest number of votes, elected. For or against Commission and electing two Commissioners: For Commission 323 votes - Against Commission 162 votes The Mayor declared the Commission form of government carried. For Commissioners: H. J. Pfeiffer 306 votes J. N. Johnson 88 votes T. F. Smith 167 votes Jesse J. Roark 180 votes ; Jas. S. Crate, Jr. 331 votes:/ Motion by Johnson, second by Smith, that James S. Crate, Jr. and H. J. Pfeiffer, the candidates receiving the highes number of votes, be declared elected to serve for one year and that the election returns be placed on file. Carried. Ald. Dunham brought up the matter of compen ation for Johnnie Thornton due to injury received while on duty for the City. Motion by Dunham, second by Johnson, that Johnnie Thornton be paid for one weekts salary plus doctor bill. Carried. Aldermen Johnson, Smith, Norris, Dunham and Roark made short talks offering their cooperation, if needed, to the newly e- lected Commissioners. • Mayor Ruff expressed his appreciation to the Aldermen for their in helping to overcome the obstacles with which they were con- fronted while in office. Mayor Ruff also offered his cooperation to the newly elected Commissioners. The newly elected Commissioners.. Jas. S. Crate, Jr.. and H. J. Pfeiffer, were administered the oaths of office. Motion by Johnson, second by Dunham, that the meeting ad- journ. Me The new Commission was called to order by Mayor Ruff. Motion by Crate, second by Pfeiffer, that all presently employed City employees be temporarily reemployed at their present salaries and all elected City Employees be retained at their elected salaries. Carried. The City Secretary checked the roll with the following present: MRyor Ruff, Commissioners Crate and Pfeiffer, City Atty. Kiibler, City Secretary Sharp. Mr. Pfeiffer stated that he appreciated the confidence that the pub - lie had placed in him by electing him to office and would do every- thing to carry out the wishes of the people and cooperate with the Mayor and Mr. Crate. Mr. Crate stated that he also appreciated the confidence placed in him and would not let the people down. Motion by Crate, second by Pfeiffer, that the meeting adjourn.
