Regular meeting of the City Commission was called to order by Mayer H. J. Pfeiffer, with the following members and city officials present; Commissioners Jas. S.Crate, Jr., and Wm. P. Jones, Wm. R~aness, representing 'Myatt C. Hedrick, City Engineer, Raleigh Erwin, Supt. of Public 1Yorks, and J.E. P:4uldoon, City Clerk. Minutes of the last meeting were read and approved. Mr. Geo. Counts, ~~'. Bartley, Geo. Sharp, Jr., John Iiolman, Rex Brewer and J. H. Baker, representing the La Porte Independent School District, appeared before the Commiss ian and requested them to annex certain territory comprising a portion of the present School Listriet, for the reason that it appeared imminent that the City of Houston was considering annexation of such territory. If the City of Houston did annex this property, then the territory so annexed would automatically beecQn.e the territory of the Houston Independent Soh®ol District. They urged the City to help them protect the Sohool District and in the event of ax~y litigation they personally would vote to recommend the School District to pay one half of the attorney's fees. The Commission unanimously agreed to help the Ia Porte Independent School District '~ and instructed the City Attorney to draw an ordinance and have ready at the next regular meeting, and to include the following field notes in same, as follows% BEGINNING at a point where the East right-of-way line aP Red Bluff Road, Harris County, 'Texas, intersects the Vest boundary line of the La Forte Independent Sohool District, as established by an act of the 36th Legislature, at its second called session, being effective July 15, 1919, and such act appearing of record ~~'~'"`~~• in the Laws of Texas, Volume 19, t~i.ge 55 3 THENCE, in a Southwesterly direction with said West boundary line of said La- Porte Independent Soho®1 District and continuing with said boundary line to a point where it intersects the shore line of Galveston Bay, Harris County, Texas; THENCE, in a northwesterly direotion with said shore line and continuing along said shore line to a point where it intersects an imaginary line running parallel to, 2500' distant from and on the South side of, the center of the Houston Ship Channel; THENCE, in a N®rthwesterly direotion with said imaginary line to a point where it intersects the North right-of-moray line of `T'exas State Highway ~1LFb. Carried. Motion by Jones, second by Crate, instructing the City Clerk to have published in the city's official newspaper, Ordinance No. 387, dated September 13, 1949• Carried. ~~tl • • i • Mx. S. P. Gilbert, with. the State Highway Department, appeared before the Comm- ission, stating the Highway Department wished to work in conjunction with the ,~, City on their paving program and wished to be advised when the City let contract ~ for work. T~4r. V'd. x. Johns, representing Tyson Smith Company, appeared befs+re the Commission and talked at length of Steel tiVater 't'anks. He was advised to submit his best bid when bids were requested. h2otion by Crate, seoond by Jones, instructing the City Clerk to advertise for bids on 1 - 3000 BBl. Galvanized Bolted Steel `l'ank, 29' - 82" Ill x 2~' - 12" high, gauges 10-12-12-]2-12, complete with inside and outside ladders and other appurtenances, as recommended by R. Erwin, Supt. of Axblic Works, all to be deliverod and erected on our foundation. Carried. Tulotion by Jones, seoond by Crate, authorizing the City Clerk to issue a pur- chase order to Vance Turner, for 3312 feet of 8" oast iron pipe, at ~1.5o per foot. Carried. No. 3409 Reference copy of letter reoeived by this offioe from the Texas highway Department addressed to Muyar Pfeiffer, dated July 29, 1949, notifying the City of La Porte that the Texas Highway Department would enter into the above referenced street improvements, it is noted that under Aa.ra- graph 6 ©f the mentioned letter it is set out that the City will pr®- vide for parallel parking on the streets improved under the 3oint agree- ment . In so much as the La Porte Independent Sohool Distriot has requested additional parking area al®ng the ~choel property which westld necessi- tate angular parking, it is suggested by this ®ffioe that the City of La Porte request appr®val of this type of parking along the school pro- perty in writ ing . The leans Highway Departme~rt approved the plans prepared by this ®ffioe, which inoluded a portiam of this parking area -for the sub~eet pro3eet by letter dated January 5, 1950. The plans do nat definitely state the type of parking dos iced, therefore, in the opinion of this offiee, a further statement from the Highway Department would be good insuranoe against any future difficulties.
