' MINUTES - REGULAR MEETING LA PORTE CITY COb~lIISSION -JUNE 3Ra, 1955 10:00 A. PJI. Regular meeting of.tho La Porte City Canmission was called t o order by Mayor M. D. Burgin, with the follcmrSng members and city mfficials present: Commiss- ioners L. R. Rigby anol H. P. Pfeiffer, Supt. of Public Z~arks W. A. Arthur, Special Counsel Jho. S. Kiibler, and City Clerk J.E. PduldOOn. M~.nutes of the last meeting were read and approved. Mr. H, Hudson, Southwestern Be11 Telephone CQmpar~y Manager, and Mr. Pipcock, D:i,strict Manager, appeared befar~e the Commission and filed a request for higher rates in La Porte. He stated the last increase in telephone rates here was in 1950, and since that time, because of the continuing high cost of furnishing telephone service, the present rates have proved to be inadequate to yield a fair return on.the investment in the La Porte telephone system. They gave the city rate ad~ustraerrt data, and asked the City to give this matter their attention. The City officials said they would take this matter urd er ad- visement. Mr. Jack Trainer appearee~ before the Com~ni.ssion and requested them to approve a barbecue pit in Block 53, La. Porte. The Commission unanimously approved a barbecue pit, with grates, to have walls of masonry 8" in thickness, and steel stack, to be above aztomobiles. Carried. ~d[otion by Pfeiffer seeon~l by Rigby, ,panting the Ce~mmunity Ch~oh permission to paint signs on the city sidewalks, advertising their revival meetings. Carried. The Mayor read a letter from the Texas National Guard, in which they request to construct a hangar on the East side of the National Guard building. Motion by Rigby second by Pfeiffer, approving hangar plans on the East side of the National Guard. buulding, pending approval by the Civil Aeronautics Ac~ninistrati on. Carried. Motion by Rigby, second. by Pfeiffer, der~.ng a request for tax refund on taxes voluntarily paid in erxor, on Lots in block 5, La Porte. Carried. Mayor I3~gin requested the City Clerk to open and read the bids for 153. feet of 6" sewer line in Blocks 5~., 67, 78 and 91, La Porte. The bids were opened and read as follovrs: Burton Utility Serv3.ce -bid at eighty ceirts ($.80¢) or X1,227.20, and seventy cents (x.70¢) for any extension, City to construct manholes. , 313 3].4 Jesse Bes~l.l -bid at ninety cents, ($.90¢), 0r X1,380.60. The Commission tentatively awarded bid to Burt:ati Utility Service. Carried. Idayar Bvrgi.n a~mounced the City was asked t a participate in a nation-ride program r-I.th the ~ Civilian Defease. The City decided they could not participate at this time, as they did not have all the faci73ties neces sary. The Com~ni.ssi®n unanimously agreed to run a sevrer main to Mrs. Lena David t s place a t 710.
