HomeMy WebLinkAbout1955-08-19 Regular Meeting~ i MINUTES -REGULAR MEETING LA PORTE CITY COMMISSION - AUGUST 19, 1955 4:3o P. M. Regular meeting of the City Commission was called to order by Mayor M. D. Burgin, with the following members and pity officials present: Commissioners H. P. Pfeiffer .,and L. R. Rigby, Supt. of Public Works W. A. Arthur, Special Counsel Jno. S. Biibler, and Asst. City C~:erk Eula Erwin. Minutes of the last meeting were read and approved. Mr. Bob Harris of Pasadena appeared before the Commission to inquire into the possibilty of the City furnishing dater and sewer services.in a proposed residential development about one mile south of the La Porte city limits on Highway 1l~b. The Commission promised Mr. Harris they would see what they could work out. Mr. James E. Stewart and Mr. Al Wadsworth appeared before the Commission and asked the City to write a latter to Houston Lighting & Power Co. requesting them to remove four light poles at the City's Airport, near the South East corner runway and to bury the hi-line. Motion by Rigby, second by Pfeiffer that City write a letter as Mr. Stewart requested. Motion by Pfeiffer, second by Rigby, that personal taxes on Bartley's Pharmacy be reduced from ~557.61~ to X160.00. Carried. Motion by Pfeiffer, second by Rigby, that the following Resolution be adopted: RESOLUTION WHEREA..S, heretofore, the Mayor of the City of La Porte prepared and sub- mitted to the Board of Commissioners, at its meeting head on August 5th, 1955, his proposed budget for the Piseal year, July 1, 1955 to June 30, 1956. WHEREAS, the Board of Commissioners filed such proposed budget with the Asst. Clerk of the City on the 5th day of August, 1955, and designated that ae public hearing on such budget be held at the City Ha11 at L}s30 P. M. on August 19th,, 1955, and paused public notice of suoh hearing to be me,de; and,. WHEREAS, suoh public hearing has been held, it is therefor®, ordered by the Board of Commissioners that the budget, as prepared and submitted by the Mayor, is hereby finally approved by the Board of Commissioners and it is hereby ordered that a true copy of such approi~ed budge~c, together wi th a copy of this order, ~° shall be filed in each of the offices of the Clerk of the City of La Porte, the County Clerk of Harris County, Texas, and the State Comptroller at Austin, Texas. 329 Carried. 330 Motion by Rigby, second by Pfeiffer to purchase 75 Street Signs from Viking Supply Co. at X7.40 each, delivered. Carried. Upon recommendation oP the Mayor, motion by Pfeiffer, second by Rigby to have a member of the Auxiliary Police relieve Chief of Police Russia Jacobi so that he may serve Warrants of arrest. _ ~ Carried. _ Motion by Rigby, second by Pfeiffer, to accept check of H. W. Angel in the amount of $151.05 in payment of Curb and Gutter in Block 53, La Porte. Carried; ;f. -~ The Commission went on record as supporting the Wheel Tax and the proposed high bridge across the ship channel. Motion by Pfeiffer, second by Rigby, to have Houston Lighting and Power install a street light at the intersection of 11th and B Streets. .r- Carried. The Commission instructed Special Counsel John S. Kiibler to draw up an easement for a sewer line~Block 8, Sylvan Beach. Motion by Rigby, second by Pfeiffer, that the following persons be appointed as Auxiliary Policemen: George Lundy, Brock L. Morrow, Elvis Ray Strickland, Morris Lemons(col) and Rudell Phillips(col)~ and to accept.the resignation of the following: D. B. Hearn, Joe Jardinorand Ralph Gissler. Carried.
