Meza; Commissioners John Tomerlin, I. J. Kibodeaux, Virginia Cline and Tom C. Simons. MEMBERS OF THE COMMISSION ABSENT: None. OTHER CITY OFFICIALS PRESENT: J. R. Hudgens, City Administrator; Margie Goyen, City Clerk; H. F. Freeman, Chief of Police; Gerard Nutting, Public Works Director; Al Steckman, Inspector; Stan Sherwood, Parks & Recreation Director; Knox Askins, City • Attorney. OTHER CITY OFFICIALS ABSENT: D. R. McLaughlin. OTHERS: A. J. Busch, Jr., and David Corbin of Busch, Hutchison and Associates, Inc., Consulting Engineers; Jennie Riley, Evelyn Kennedy, Lillie Montgomery, Mineola Walker and Eddie Gray. PRESIDING: J. J. Meza, Mayor. + + + 1. CALL TO ORDER - Mayor Meza called the public hearing to order. + + + • • • • Public Hearing 8/2/78 2 2. PROVIDE CITIZENB WITH AN OPPORTUN'TTY TO COMMENT ON THE POSSIBLE USES OF ENTITLEMENT REVENUE`SHARING MONIES - A. JENNIE RILEY - was recognized and addressed the Commission on t e need for a swimming pool for the North Side, additional police protection and consideration for upgrading and lighting streets on the North Side as her suggestions for uses for Revenue Sharing monies. B. COMMISSIONER CLINE - asked what Revenue Sharing monies could be used for? The City Administrator stated that Revenue Sharing monies could be used for almost anything, including operating expenses, but discouraged using these monies for operating expenses. Streets, water and sewer and debt service could be paid for out of the Revenue Sharing monies. He further stated that Revenue Sharing monies had been extended for another six and one half years. C. EVELYN KENNEDY - was recognized and suggested that Revenue Sharing monies be spent on developing the new park the City was purchasing, Little Cedar Bayou and projects for the Heritage • Society, such as the old train station. It was determined that funds for the Nutrition Center would continue to come from the Revenue Sharing Funds. D. LILLIE MONTGOMERY - was recognized and spoke on the need for demolishing old uildings within the City. There was a brief discussion regarding the process of law required before a building could be demolished. E. MINEOLA WALKER - was recognized and asked that the Commission consider the need for a hospital. Commissioner Simons stated that he had been trying for three years to get a hospital for La Porte, but you can not get doctors interested in coming to our City. F. EDDIE GRAY - was recognized and stated that a lot of work had been done toward architectural plans for a hospital and they were still working on something for his new shopping center. However, it takes time and you have to have doctors that will come to a facility. G. JENNIE RILEY - asked if we could get doctors to come to • the health clinic on 8th street more than one day a week? It was determined that that was a problem. Doctors are not willing to come. • • • Public Hearing 8/2/78 3 3. ADJOURNMENT - Mayor Meza asked if there was anyone desiring to speak further regarding the use of Revenue Sharing monies.
