Yes it is safe and the school district is good Absolutely - it is a great community and as yet is not overcrowded. Absolutely! We love La Porte because it has a small town feel but lots of opportunities for growth Absolutely. Safe, quiet, small town atmosphere, easy to live here, nice people. Absolutely; often do. 1) Quality of residents 2) property value/taxes 3) life style 4) schools 5) ambience (laid back) 6) city government no reason why not! Accessible - Quiet Actually I do all the time far enough away but still close to needed facilities etc. Air pollution Beautify city but no backing from your own codes enforcement. Because of the small town atmosphere Better than Pasadena but under par with Friendswood Building permits/ inspection! requirements too high Bus drivers at the high school have the worse attitude than the students. They think because they are school buses they can cut in front of cars by entering into the streets w/out stopping and yielding to the present major street traffic. This is in violations of Texas Safety Traffic laws. Just because buses might have a tight schedule doesn't mean they should ignore safety and inconsiderate trying to own the road. In the news we always hear about bus accidents. Buses should be staggered between traffic so a one bus accident doesn't turn into a multiple bus pile up with many injuries. Definitely Definitely, I just recently ~ent house shopping and looked at all surrounding areas and we just kept coming back because we already live here we already knew about the hidden amenities. Definitely! La Porte is a small town that is growing everyday and getting better. I have lived here 40yrs. and never have thought of moving away Depends on the area. Do not know Everyone a mile away can hear the stadium loud speakers all the time when the have to get up in the early for work. Were sure the fans can hear it at a lower volume. Why do the , building inspectors have hands off attitude with developer builders yet get picky with owners doing routine repairs? Excellent school district Fairly safe, quiet, homey, more bicycle police, local transportation Flip a coin For the most part we have good schools, parks and recreation but we also have poor air quality, poor warning on chemical spills, bad traffic control and selective police protection. I would, just for the La Porte district school I'm disappointed in the schools La Porte had a reputation of great schools. We have problem kids that we all label "bad" and don't care. Teachers have lost respect of students. I realize parents do not back up the teachers, but the school district should be able to. 2 adults on EVERY bus, one to drive and one to watch. City lets control slope on holidays2 garbage bags are too small to fit standard trashcan while being filled 1) There is a problem wi dogs roaming in the Creekmont area. Summer sewer rates- to compensate for lawn watering and pools. 2. A more convenient recycling service. Furnishing containers and curb plup 50 cent a paper? 37 cent stamp for La Porte? A couple of years ago my neigh.borhood was essentially being terrorized by a young "Thug" and his friends. EVERY house on my street was broken into or cars were broken into, some more than once. The police do not patrol our side streets only the main street. They never took print \s when they were called. We were so afraid we bough.t an alarm system. I was very disappointed in the way the police handled the situation. I really feel our police dept. should be less apathetic (not all are that way, I know). I realize LP is not a high. crime community but I think that our police could use a little more training. Alert residents early regarding time and place of hazardous waste disposal. Thanks for the survey opportunity All I ask is that you be careful with zoning areas I know we want business but we also want a nice place to live Almost needed to use the ambulance service one time and couldn't find one in La Porte - Most Depressing - EMS was not needed but a regular ambulance was. Also fix up the play ground at Fairmont Park -Park children go there all the time to play and there are only swings for the little ones As a married couple we were amazed @ the restrictions and amount of city interference in the development of our La Porte property. Vie understood there must be guidelines in the city but restrictions such as "no front fencing" we feel is ~safe to ourselves and our property, and takes away our righ.t to privacy we only want to beautify our yard, which the city benefits from in raising our value and taxes. Unfortunately we recommended people not buy in La Porte due to said restrictions. As a member of the volunteer fire dept., I see a huge need for the police force to be nicer and cooperate more with the fire dept. Other cities have mutual respect between depts. and La Porte P.D is shameful in the way they have no respect for or desire to help the F.D. please work on a system so the departments can work together. Thanks At this time w~ have not lived here long enough. to answer most of these questions, but do look forward of doing this survey next year. The only people that we have had time to make contact wi have been the water dept., which this person was very business like, but also not friendly. The people out at the city barn were very helpful wi the recycling and helpful wi the mulch. I have had a problem wi getting heavy trash picked up on the days that it is to be picked up. There are huge drainage culverts that need screens to keep animals and kids out. The condition of bathrooms at sylvan Beach is horrible. I had a water leak. The city came out 3 times before I fixed it. A plumber came twice and charged $ 100.0010 does nothing. Finally La Porte water dept fixed. Adopt deer parks idea of a permit or stickers. There is enough. money made at these sales to afford them. Think. about this, I don't believe in littering, in fact I hate it. Start fining people for littering by leaving up their old signs. The city has to pay someone to drive around and pick up old signs; that should be considered littering. Keep La Porte clean. Thanks for the public display of the U.S Flag and the fireworks this 4th were the best in years. Even the La Porte paper may have no bearing on this problem- I really dislike the heavy truck traffic on 225 especially during the early morning rush hour and the potholes and trash as a result of this heavy traffic. The signals at man stop ligh.ts are too slow and you wait to long for ligh.ts to turn green. Downtown La Porte is ugly. I have not seen much improvement in 22 years on this situation. There is not much improvement in beautification of our city after living here almost 22 years the worst problem I have encountered other that the chemical plants. Especially the flares burning at nigh.t where it's hard to get some sleep. The staffwho manages the water dept's drive thru window who takes your payment, rarely smiles, or greets you, and certainly never says ''thank you". They act like they resent waiting on you- you are an inconvenience to them. I would say the best part is the trash pick up and convenience of distributing the trash bags and keeping the city as best it can litter free. Every city employee I have come in contact with has been very friendly and helpful. Every time I see LPPD officer wla vehicle pulled over I do two things. First I laugh. out loud at the site of the two police cars with at least two uniformed officers being used to pull over 1 car. Then the anger/disgust sets in quickly at the realization that our tax dollars are being wasted on this. We just built a new home and have seen 2 patrol cars in our neigh.bor in 2 yrs. I had called LPPD both times for the "rocket" type motorcycles being ridden through. all the time. Also, we have 4-wheelers thru here constantly. The only thing we don't see through here is police. Excellent programs offered by La Porte PD (I.e., citizen police academy.) Fairmont Parkway needs more traffic control with cars and 18 wheelers. Drainage is getting worse every year. OSHA needs to check chemical companies they are definitely letting off pollution in violation. La Porte is beginning to be over developed Greed Finish sidewalk crosswalks for wheel chairs in Fairmont Park West. Bike sidewalks for San Jacinto. College and other places. Water Bill notes are often out of date- for example, this month my bill, dated 6/20, advertise a town hall meeting on,6/9. Hearing a variety of alarms from the city and Bayport is confusing and sometimes frigh.tening. Not getting an "all clear" on occasion is even worse! Only local business could attend as vendors. This allowed people of the community meet and get to lie familiar wi 'locals' there were feelings' for advertising and keeps business. My children were born and raised here and would like to celebrate their life milestones in La Porte without going br:oke. Thanks for 25 good years. I have a long list of facts that prove your gov. is wasteful, incompetent & corrupt. You have continued in this view, only because most citizensl taxpayers are not aware of the facts. I'm building a web site to make them aware of the facts it will include portraits of the guilty. So taxpayers can put a face with the n~e, I think that will lead to the corrective action our council men have failed to take. I have attempted to bring to the attention of the Mayor and planner the problem of allowing agility travel horses camper trailers and boats to be parked on the streets and in private driveways. This causes problems with parking and blocking one lane or both on the streets (that are already narrow) I have been in Texas for 3 years, we are looking for our first home and La Porte is the only city we plan to live I have had problems wi Habitat for Humanity in the building on the houses in the Lomax: area that needs to be watched more closely they think they rule the area that they build in. They think they control the area this problem is from the founder older man. I have lived here for over a year and I haven't seen animal control in my neigh.borhood I have only lived in La Porte 9 months but I am enjoying the time in the city very much I have seen plup trucks dump trash on our streets. We need a competitive grocery store not more #1 store. We do not need to look @abandoned cars in yards. We moved here because of the Bay as a recreation area and would like more bay recreation areas. I hear that La Porte city pools may be closing soon. I would hate to know I sat as mayor or council member during something like this. Recreation for the youth should never be considering a revenue stream, we need to do more for them not less at cost! I know many city employees who feel the city management doesn't care about them anyone I live in an old house and would like to make improvements. Therefore I live in a house probably not as I would like. I lived in La Porte years ago - no longer live there but have a rent house I Purchased one of the new homes on the N. side and two of my visitors have been pulled over because they were white and on the N.side. The N. side is not the only drug area and I did not buy a home so that my company could be harassed when they leave my house. The police Dept. needs to focus on other areas other than the N .side I see drug addicts walking and catching rides down the street and there is never a cop around yet my friends get pulled over. Also mosquitoes are horrible around here. This wooded area on 400 Block ofN. 1st needs to be cleaned up. There is trash everywhere! I really should not comment much on life in La Porte since I am there so little. I work long hours downtown, but the limited amount of contact is very positive. The only time I had needed to contact the police dept, the response was quick and courteous. I also had to go to City Hall to change my name on my water bill and the lady who assisted me was efficient and nice to deal with. But I really cannot say enough. about the response after Allison. Drainage was so good that as soon as the rain stopped, the water started going down and it didn't seem to be any time at all before trash was being picked up. I have friends who live in Houston and it was days before the FIRST trash p/up-- we had had several plups by then. Again, thank you, thank you, and thank you. The only\y thing I would like to see is some "adult" time set aside at the pool in Brookglen. I would like to lap swim wlout having go down to the recreation center (yes, I'm lazy), and this would be a boon to me! I know there is an issue w having lifeguards in the evenings, but just a suggestion. An'YW.ays, thanks for a great community. I think city should notify home owners to keep their home space, yard, homes in orderly shape, yards clean to keep rodent, mosquitoes down, there are some old homes that should be demolished are in bad shape and unsafe to live in but people sti]] live there. I think if we had cleaned ditches it is easier to keep the city cleaned for older it would be safer. I think it is a big bummer and unfair for you to charge an adult (especially a senior) to go inside the pool to watch their grand children swim in the pool, unless the adult is going to sWim. I think La Porte is a bit too pretentious and takes it self too seriously-relax and recognize it is a nice small town not a large city- get rid of the police motorcyc1es- more expensive than patrol cars and not as useful- watch the kids driving wild and fast when high. school lets out I think overall La Porte is a great town. People are genera]]y friendly and we try to maintain a "small town" atmosphere. I do wish howeyer that the issue of "heavy trash" days could be addressed. People leave ugly stuff out sometimes for weeks!! We have one Created with SurveyGold - @2004 Golden Hills Software, Inc. - http://surveygold.com e e person in our neigh.borhood that left a toilet out for over 2wks. It really brings our neigh.borhood down. Perhaps sending out flyers or some other form of communication to encourage people to be more aware of this would be helpful. Tltank you for listening I think they are doing a wonderful job I think this is a Great city. I'd like to see more events downtown. Events where the. streets are closed and you can walk around and shop and eat and chat with people. I think the city can "play up" the great senior exemption and ,encourage more independent/assisted living places. If the city accommodates all ages- that will encourage the sandwich generation. Their parents can be close by them helping ease the crunch of taking care of their kids and their parents. I use the fitness center and use it everyday I want to know why my Property tax had gone up so much. My home is in bad need of repairs. S~ely it is not worth what I am being taxed I wish there could be more security @ the high. school- more officers patrolling the grounds- stricter penalties for bullies and those who harass others- teachers keep closer observation of the rooms between classes and more authority to correct by whatever means. There is a lot of bullying going on @ the high. school I would hope it will never be mandatory to leave my home I would like for the city to be responsible for the grass on the side that belongs to the city, sometimes the grass grows long and they do not come to cut it. Also I would like for the mayor to consider placing road bumps in our neighborhood for the safety of our children. I would like the inspection group to do a better job on derelict buildings and houses. I don't want to see as many trailer homes in the neigh.borhoods unless they are very well maintained. They are a danger to surrounding homes in the event of a hurricane or tornado. I would like to get taxes frozen like the other cities around here for people over 60 and disabled. The Police Dept. should have more warrant rivers to bring in more money. I would like to have a city gym located on the West side of 146 I would like to have the heavy trash picked up more. I would like to know more about the "free" mulch and other things (if there are any). I don't know where to go find these things, but I know they exist. I am concerned for my kids and all other th~ you good bless Not at this time Not sure if the mayor would like to hear what I have to say On major problem I have wi La Porte is the fact that my garage sign sale signs are constantly being taken down. If garage sales are illegal in L.P why does it seem like only mine are taken down, not the sign beside mine? I "do" take my signs down daily, then put them back up the next day if needed, but the last on I had I put signs up 4-5 times then finally I quit the sale. I think there are better solutions like other cities One negative: I attempted to define common areas in my subdivision; the person I contacted was rude and no help. Positive: the parks and servicesl recreation facilities exceed any community I have visited of any population. Sadly in contrast the experience with neigh.boring law enforcement has been bad or worse. Open drainage ditches and very dangerous, gives the look of an undeveloped are. Breed mosquitoes Our alley has needed dirt every since the 70's. Our area is progressing at such a rapid rate that the drainage system can not keep up- resulting in our area new being lower to the new residences prone to flooding and standing water in the open drainage ditches Our city is in pretty good shape but there is always room for improvement- it is not "what a great little town" yet but moving in righ.t direction- signage from 146 is bad needs much improvement- you don't know where you are when you drive by!! Over the years with the closing of 1st the theater and the skate ring we have left our youth with little to do here. We have a scattering of pools and parks, but it seems like we could do more for our young people than this. Please clean ease ways or whatever it's called, behind the house. I've lived in my house for 13yrs and it's never been cleaned. Please clean out the culverts. Those are the pipes under the driveways. When it rains they don't drain properly. Please continue to fix up and grow downtown, Main St. and have more community get together, put more info in Bayshore Sun, more discounts for seniors. Please don't cut "family" services such as garbage bags swimming pools, etc. Also, my sidewalk was tore up five weeks ago. They fixed one section and never returned for the other one! Please fix Police Departm, ent Please force people not to put out heavy trash no more than two days before pickup. Neigh.borhoods sometime look trashy. Please have a better proof reader do the Bayshore Sun. Have Christmas street stroll on weekend or during Christmas Holidays. La Porte is perfect as far as the cityl and country being meshed together goes we have pizza place Chinese food, movie rentals, if anything put a skating rink or dog park. ,Thank you for this opportunity to speak about my city Please look into cleaning up the duplexes on Scotch Moss. They always look real trashy. It would be very much appreciated Thank You! Please look at the fitness center facility compared to YMCA the programs for children and/or families are extremely insufficient. The city web site if not good at all look at other cities city of Deer Park for the information program offerings etc. we fall way behind. Beginning'efforts to improve Main St are commendable keep up momentum and consider family based activities. Many city public facilities start out good but end up being neglected to half-baked the potential is there but no follow thru P .S. The mayor is great! Thanks Mr. Porter This survey is a great start, thank you. Please start listening to the younger population and families (the future) and not just the industries and elder populations! Please slow down on development - we do not need to look like Pasadena but that is where we are headed with in the next 5 years. Keep our green spaces or I will be moving away, stop changing farming zones to businesslindustrial zones. We need to keep our small city charm- plus flooding is going to become worse as we pave over wildlife areas. The irony of the lack of deer in deer park is not lost - let's preserve the transplanted deer. I love to drive down Fairmont and see them grazing it's an incredible sigh.t, which you guys are destroying. Please spray more often for mosquito. It's really had when they attack you in the middle of the day! ! Please tell me where the fitness center is located. What days are recycling pick up days? What day is heavy trash pick up? Please, please encourage an improved attitude wlin the police dq,t. there is an antagonism and intimidation that goes on towards citizens. They should be models of what they enforce. ' Repair old sidewalks Sad to say, I was not able to attend the hurricane awareness seminars that were help a cc;>uple of months ago due to a death in the family and illness. I am extremely concerned about a major hurricane approaching our area, and then evacuation routes not being adequate. I agree with the mayor of Kemah, bill king. Even on a good day, I know you are aware of the traffic on 146,225 etc. and then one ofthe main arteries out of here - 146 north over the Fred Hartman bridge - would be shut down when winds reached 45 miles per hour. I just can't imagine the panic and chaos of our population trying to get out of here if we are faced with a category 4 or 5 hurricane Sanitation and parks and recreation part of this PDF are damaged, fields are associated so responses will not be accurate Sanitation workers need to pick up spilled trash. The city does a good job wi public events. Speed limits should be lowered in Lomax area & more enforcement of speed limits. School taxes go down for families with no children in school. Send out more notices when fellas leave garbage on curb too long. Convenience fee should be removed. Sidewalk on 146 is wonderful. But we are concerned wi the gap between the main road and the sidewalk. It is not being compacted wi time. The first big rain big rain someone will get stuck. Some grounds are to be cleared to put down a skateboard park so kids sty out of trouble. In front of Bayshore school is an empty lot which could be turned into a playground. Some of the people in Heavy Trash Pick Up are rude and not cooperative. Someone needs to trim trees and bushes that are blocking the view for motorist at stop signs and some intersections around town. Stand why the curb appearance along Spencer (grass always needs to be cut) is not kept in better condition - at times it looks like a jungle of weeds and gives La Porte a bad living impression. The city is starting to move some projects forward after years of keep it up The city keeps adding housing without considering the schools and where the children are going to go to school the city and schools should work together to promote health maybe by opening the school gyms with supervision for basketball or crafts something to do for the kids during summer and holidays at low or no cost The City of La Porte continues to hire professional consultants to aid in planning and ignore their recommendations du~ to interference by staff or department political pressure. The city is about to hand over the operation and management of its emergency communications system to Harris County. Harris County operates the worst wide area public safety system in the US. This and the issue that there is nothing for, our teens to so on weekends for entertainment The planning committee need to be changed- people are tired oftaxes going Up,Up,up then the management chases business away (tax dollar cost). but on the other hand La Porte does have a antique district on Main Street, even a well known Crack Hotel not many cities have this The police dept. is useless from the top down. If supervision does not care the subordinates won't either. Even officer that live here agree there is little to no protection for the law abiding citizen. For example, I was told by a supervisor in the dept. it is ok for someone to point a gun at people and make threats wlit. What's wrong wi that picture?!! The police dept. is to be commended! I have a special needs child (autistic) who called 911 several times when we moved here. Officers came to the house to check. It could have turned very ugly, but your officers were very polite in explaining the circumstances for the visits in addition to taking the time to speak wi my son (on his terms). In addition to their great "customers" service attitudes, I have to say that this is one of the few cities you do not see officers speeding wrecklessly around town wi out ligh.ts on. As an owner of a small economy car who places her son in the back seat this makes me much more at ease. Thanks The pool ,at Brook Glen is dirty wi rocks on the bottom. Life guardsl pool staff makes it seem like an inconvenience to clean the wading pool! After its clean pieces of paper etc. are still found floating! I've been to this pool 4 years and have never seen it as dirty! The rate of improvement and upkeep of the city have fallen way behind, the tax increases we have received over the 17years I lived here. Where is money going? I don't mind paying ifI know its being used in a positive manner. I don't see it. The restrictions for farm animals are bad. I hear the chickens behind me, goat blearing, and have horses on my street. There is a resident with too many cars which I have complained about. Dog barking should be addressed. There is a drainage erosion problem that we have been trying to get fixed for eigh.t years now. It is time to step up and help the citizens and fix a problem that was messed up from the beginning. There is an old abandoned motel o~ Broadway & Forrest which needs to be demolished work was being done, but it seemed to have stopped on a personal note the alleyway between 1200 block of Oregon and Montana could use concrete or asphalt. The city hasn't looked at the traffic from first to third St going north and south Things for the sidewalk from town to Bayshore School. This city has spent too much timC? enforcing codes on people who are trying to improve their property and very little time on properties that are rundown in a state of disrepair,. and are unkempt. This old restoration of main street waste of time and from opinion vote from taxes This survey IS an excellent plant to the possibilities of those wanting to work with the city to at least let their concerns be known despite the actual lack of direct contact and involvement now if the people in charge are able and willing to work with what the public is actually experiencing in their lives well all get going and address some of the real issues----- people issues!!!! This survey is too complicated and too long. City council does nothing. I haven't seen or heard from Councilman District 2 in years. Haven't seen him in YEARS. Called city'!3! This will also bring revenue into city for improvement and beautification projects. Water bill- the lady was rude, short and very unprofessional ,Water dept. lost our water bill we had to pay two months lady wasn't that friendly but all is we]] now We have a problem wi drainage in our back yard. Our whole street does and no one has tried to fix it our fence is falling down. Weare a family of 6 and always run out of garbage bags before the city passes out more. We did not want to live in a subdivision with little or no yards. Created with SurveyGold - @2004 Golden Hills Software, Inc. - http://surveygold.com . . We are glad that we moved to La Porte. Our only problem is the schools. Our son was attacked at LPJH in the locker room and they did not press charges after we told them to. They said their own campus police would take care of it but to our knowledge charges were never filed. At least two days on two consecutive days were jumped by the same gang in the'locker room. Then verbal harassment continued even in gym wi coaches hearing it (because I wanted it reported) and the coaches did nothing nor did the administrator who has now left the district. We had to remove our son from La Porte schools. I've heard horrors about how the school district has mishandled special education programs and funding from several parents ofSp.Ed students. We need schools that are safe and good We are shut-ins and can't enjoy any ofthese services. Mr. Collins is blind and we can't understand why our utility and taxes are so high.! We are very happy here in La Porte. Several of our family and friends have followed us here. We plan on returning here. We grocery shop Seabrook because its closet than La Porte Kroger. Heavy trash is left out for sometimes 2 to 3 wks. W lout fines. Bayport will kill all the nice things that have happened here noise, pollution, traffic will come We have a lot of teenagers and young people who speed through. our area. We have children that play & ride bikes outside. There needs to be signs posted for 20 mph or speed bumps. We have lived in Spenwick all of the 28 years never had a park for the kids to play in. This has always been a big concern of mine. Now my kids are grown but I hope someday ill have one to take me grandkids to. Our streets need improvement and traffic will probably be worse when on Carlow when Canada opens up. The streets of La Porte need to be kept clean. Mc Allen TX is a larger city than La Porte and you could eat off their streets. They have a clean city. La Porte can be a nice place to live; people just don't care what their driveways look like. Shop owners take note. We live in Summer Wind subdivision, please put more streets in We love the new pool equipment and would like to see more. Also move cornered (shade areas) @ the pools to help wlparents being comfortable. A cover over parts of the pool. Help reduce sun burns and heat related medical problems. ' We need a new District attorney, Atkins and Armstrong should have been fired with JB, Williams and Powell. We felt it would be better if a judge gave them a good lecture or scare tactic When I grew up in La Porte there was always thing to so When my husband passed away suddenly I called 911. In MINUTES EMS was at my home along with the police and even a fire truck I never really go to say "thanks" or tell them how much I appreciate their services and quick response. JOBS well done You should be commended for hiring a Main Street coordinator and the efforts being made to revitalize Main Street and improve the zoning. Hopefully, you will continue efforts to attract a hotel and conference center and develop our bay front. On the down side, however, in order to attract and keep business in La Porte, the permit and inspection dept. needs improvement wi their courtesy, attitude of intimidation and power (rather than being helpful). They need to inform people applying for permits what is required by giving them a list rather than making them make multiple trips for each step. They need to communicate more w. other dept. Inspection needs to stop giving 20.00 dollar tickets for small infractions that they do not follow up on. Really appreciate the beautification of Fairmont PKWY. and good condition of parks. Think the skateboard park was a great idea for our youth. I would like to see community events at Sylvan Beach Pavilion open to public more often. Also would like to see more festivals at Sylvan Beach Park. Great Venue.
