his park was acquired from the Fairmont Park East Homeowner's Association in 2000 as a
detention basin. The City of La Porte, working with the association, developed a plan to turn the
detention basin into a park while keeping the functionality of the detention basin, hence the
working name "Pond to Park". Now that the park is completed, we are recommending the selection
of a permanent name for the park as Cypress Falls Park.
Financial Contribution
The City of La Porte partnered with the Fairmont Park East Homeowner's Association to fund the project.
The Association contributed a total of $75,000 toward the development and construction of the park, in
three phases.
Civic Contribution
The Fairmont Park East Homeowner's Association was given the opportunity to assist with choosing the
new park name. They made several suggestions and the recommendation includes a portion oftheirfinal
suggestion of "Wood Falls". Staff felt that, since we have planted over 50 Bald Cypress trees around the
pond, that "Cypress Falls" sounded better and was more fitting when considering the park setting and
intended purpose.

The park site was an old Pecan Plantation many years ago. There are a number of mature pecan trees on the
site that bear pecans annually. The site was chosen for a park because of this unique characteristic. Through
its design, the architect has managed to keep quite a number of the pecan trees along the eastern half of the
park, while incorporating ten new youth baseball fields and other amenities. The pecan trees will add shade
for picnics both during the season as well as post and pre-season picnicking at the park. Naming the new
facility Pecan Park will draw attention to these beautiful trees and the La Porte heritage they represent. Staff
recommends adoption of this as a very fitting name for the park. At some future point, we may ask to
consider naming of individual fields for specific groups or individuals who donate funding or otherwise make
a contribution to the Association or the City in some way.
