1. Call to order.
Meeting called to order by Chairman Don Hill at 6:08 p.m.
2. Roll call of members.
Members in attendance for roll call were Don Hill, Paula Swearingen, T.J. Walker, Susan
Robinson, Herman Berges, and Jeanne Zemanek.
3. Consider approval of January 5, 2010, meeting minutes.
Motion by T. J. Walker to approve the January 5, 2010, meeting minutes. Second by Jeanne
Zemanek. The minutes were approved as presented with all in favor.
4. Develop timeline for activities leading up to Census Day, April 1, 2010.
~ Yvonne Moore spoke briefly about the presentation she gave at the Main Street
Morning Brew held earlier in the day. Also in attendance were Don Hill, Herman Berges,
and Masood Malik.
~ On behalf of the Committee, Paula Swearingen applied for and received a $2,000 grant
from the United Way. The Committee will utilize the funds for outreach; $1,000 will be
used to purchase and distribute census themed bi-Iingual pre-school coloring
books/colors to help reach historically undercounted young Hispanics. The remaining
$1,000 will be used to purchase and distribute census themed t-shirts to help reach
historically undercounted young adult male African-Americans.

~ Paula Swearingen will keep a supply of posters and literature for distribution at the
Neighborhood Center, food pantries, Chamber of Commerce and at the Chamber's
banquet.
~ To help create awareness about the census, Susan Robinson's daughter is wearing
census stickers to school and passing them out to her friends.
~ Yvonne Moore will provide Masood Malik with faith based brochures for Committee
distribution.
Distribution of census literature, posters, etc. and presentations to focus groups will begin
immediately. Areas to target are as follows:
~ Chamber of Commerce
~ Health Fairs and Street Fairs
~ LPISD
~ Pre-schools
~ Churches
~ Daycare facilities
~ Main Street businesses
~ Bus routes (Harris County Transit Authority and LPISD school buses)
~ Neighborhood Center
~ Newspaper article with phot%nline banner
~ Utility bills (message on bill or insert)
~ Food pantries
~ Library; central area and children's area
~ Fitness Center and Sr. Center
~ Municipal Court
~ City Hall
~ La Porte website
~ Municipal Cable Channel
~ City Hall marquis
~ City Departments
~ Local businesses
~ Residential yard signs
In order to avoid duplication of efforts, Committee members were asked to maintain a personal
log of places/groups they contact and/or distribute literature.
City Staff will:
~ Get information about utility bills: cycles, count, and message vs. insert
~ Post Census Day, April 1, 2010 on the City's website calendar.
~ Post news article on the City's website, linking it to the Census website.
