MINUTES - REGUlAR MEETING
OF THE
IA PORTE FIRE CODE REVIEW COMMITTEE
FEBRUARY 11, 1982
MEMBERS OF THE COMMITTEE PRESENT:
City Manager Jack Owen, Joe Sease, David Paulissen, Mark Williams, Delbert
Walker, Jerry .Hodge, Ellis Ebarb, Tom Handy, Kevin Graves, Carlos Smith and
Paul Hickenbottom.
MEMBERS OF THE COMMITTEE ABSENT:
Greg Yakim, Robert Byars, Al Fields, James Sitton, Wilson Dugger, and Morris
Rose.
OTHERS PRESENT:

1. CAlL TO ORDER- Mr. Owen called the meeting to order.
2. READING OF MINUTES - Secretary, Paul Hickenbottom read the minutes of the
last two meetings dated Novanber 23, 1982 and February 2, 1982. The
minutes of both meetings were approved by the following vote:
Ayes: All For
Nays: None
3. OlD BUSINESS: James Bermett addressed the corrmittee for a variance to
allow a hazardous occupancy to be built in the Number 1 fire zone at the
corner of 9th Street & Polk Street. Mr. Bermett is the owner of Texas
Welding Industrial Supply located at 907 W. Main, La. Porte. There was
open discussion from the corrmittee concerning this variance and Delbert
Walker made the motion to grant a variance to allow Mr. Bermett to build
a hazardous occupancy in the Number 1 fire zone. The motion did not
eliminate any building or fire code requiremnets.
Motion seconded: Mark Williams
A vote was taken:
Ayes: 5
Nays: 5
Mr. Owen, Chainnan cast an aye vote to break the tie; therefore approving
the motion.

FIRE CODE REVISION.- Article 2 - Divsion 2 - Section 2.9 - Open

Motion was made by Jerry Hodge to accept revision with the following change
in Subsection (d):
An operational .corridor shall be maintained to any fire hydrant, fire
department cormection for a sprinkler system, standpipe system to other
installed fire protection equipment which is installed for use by the city
fire department inside of a shopping center, school, hospital, medical complex,
institution or any other business. Such corridor must be a minim~mn of thirty
(30) feet wide ar larger, if determined by the Fire Marshal, to permit a
current model pumper to cormect large suction hose to a large (four (4) inch)
hydrant outlet or other installed fire protection equipment. The Fire Marshal
may require collision guards and paint striping to protect the hydrant and
identify the operational area.

Motion made by Carlos .Smith to accept revision with the following change to

FIRE CODE REVISION - Article 2 - Division 2 - Section 2.13 -Open discussion

Access driveways. serving buildings or property, located more than one
hundred fifty (150) feet from a street shall have a m;n;rrunn width of twee -
five (25) feet and have a vertical clearance of not less than fourteen (14~}
feet above the finished driveway surface. Where auxilary means of access or
fire protection measures are approved by the Fire Marshal, the above required
clearance may be modified or waived.
