Albrecrit John Joerns Alex Osmond Dennis Hlavaty Nina Browning, Secretrary P~2eeting was opened by David Brady, Chair•rrian at 12:G5 PM ITEM N0. 2: A motion was made by Jack Humphrey and seconded by Richard Hayes to approve the minutes of the July 14, • 1988 meeting. Minutes were approved as presented. ITEM NO• ~: UPDATE OF GOLF COURSE: Alex informed the Board that the course was looking real good, he said there were still a few areas that they were going to sod, but that will come later after the irrigation system is in. On the bunkers, the crew has been working real hard at getting them cleaned out and they are coming along fine. The pipes treat were put in under the cart paths have all been stubbed in and now we just need to add the perforated pipe and drains. They will try to have all this finished by the 27th of August, and Alex felt we should still plan to open on this date. Dennis Hlavaty tcld the Board that the tee boxes that looked as if they were dead are now "greening up" and will be allright by the time we open. Next Alex informed the Board concerning the driving range - he said he would like to open the range a week from this Saturday, which would be August 13th. Jack Eumphrey suggested that we try to get a notice in the paper to let the citizens know of the opening of tYie driving range; Alex said he would. • GOLF COURSE ADVISORY BOARD MEETING T~tINUTES OF AUGUST 4, 1988 PAGE 2 Dr. Wheeler asked Alex if he would also be able to open • the practice green and botYi Aiex and Dennis H. agreed that it would also be ready. h4r. Roper asked about the roadway to the No. 1 tee. Joel said the Council had approved the sitework and the contractor has assured us that they will have it completed by August 27, 19$$• David asked Joel to explain about what he was talking about when he said "sitework" - Joel told the Board treat the sitework he was talking about was the area around the clubhouse and the area going to No. 1 tee. The clubhouse construction is on scY~edule, the contractor is still trying to complete it ahead of schedule. On the concessionaire for the clubhouse, proposals were received acid have been reviewed. John Joerr~s informed the Board that the staff is negotiating with the strongest proposal at the present time and if we are unsuccessful with our negotiations with hero we ~~aill go to the firm identified as ~~2. Another question that has been brought up was the selling of liquor and the liquor license. ti•Je will be providing a letter for the concessionaire to the Liquor Control Board to get the process started. For the opening date we will provide some type of arrangement • for the selling of beer; the main thing not to get started is fcr people to bring their cwn bee r•. ITEM N0. 4i FENCING ON WHARTON-WEEMS ROAD: Joel said at the last meeting we had discussed a chain-link fence and it was suggested that staff go back and take a look at barbed wire with some landscaping. Joel informed the Board of the prices we had received from quotes. Iie told the Board staff would like to get a recommendation from them on the fencing. A motion was made by Richard Hayes and seconded by Lloyd Roper to place chain-link fence along the side by Little Cedar Bayou Park and barbed wire fencing along Wharton-Weems Road. Motion passed. It was suggested by Dennis Dunham that crepe myrtles be planted along Wharton-Weems Road where the barbed wire fencing was located. Dr. Tolles asked if there should be a locked gate located in the fencing on the side next to Little Cedar Bayou Parl: or did the Board feel this was necessary, in case of an emergency, etc.? Dennis Dunham said this could be a good point, especially if E.M.S. should need to get into this area. David Brady said he felt should the need arise at the park, the E.M.S. could go in at the park or go in by the back side of the canal. After • discussion it was decided that a gate was not necessary and would not be installed. GOLF COURSE ADVISORY BOARD MEETING MIf1UTES OF AUGUST ~, 1988 PAGE 3 • At this point Joel Albrecht brought up the fact that there had been some mention of the deck on the clubhouse. As he remembered from a previous meeting the Board had made a recommendation that should sufficient funds be available for the deck a recommendation would be presented to the City Council that this deck be added. David Brady said that this was correct. Joel Albrecht said he just wanted to be sure in case the. situation should arise in the future. ITEM NO. 5: CABLE ADVERTISEMENT: Alex said he would like to apologize, he had a lady that was to be here to meet with the Board, but she had called about 11:30 and said she was unable to make it today. Alex said what he had checked into was "Storer Cable Television", they handle the Clear Lake area and League City area. To run some ESPf1 advertisement, would cost approximately $1995.00 per month (for a six month period). Alex said if the Board would like to discuss this again at the next meeting he would try to reschedule and have her present. Richard EIayes asked if we could save that advertisement or decision until we see what the play on the course is going to be. If by Ncvember 1, 1988, the play is not up to par, then we could explore spending • some dollars on this type of advertisement, but on the other hand if the play is good we don't need to spend $12,000.00 on advertising. The remit of the Board felt that this was the best way to handle this at the present time. ITEM N0. 6: DISCUSSION ON OPENING DATE/STARTING TEE TIMES: Alex told ,y the Board that the Saturday prior to August 27th, which would be the 20th would be the best day for any member of the Board that wanted to play golf to play. At this point David said he felt we should also invite the City Council, key staff members and go out, play the course and then have a short session on any problems, etc. that surfaced while playing. Jim Longnecker suggested that this be a regular meeting of the Golf Course Advisory Board. This was agreed to and Joel told the Board that an official agenda would be posted. The meeting was set for Saturday, August 20, 1988 at 10:00 AA9. Alex said that on August 22, 1988 at 9:00 AM he was going to start taking "Tee Tirnes" for the opening date of August 27, 1988. The next Monday, he will start taking tee times for the following Tuesday thru f~ionday and so forth. r~ U GOLF COURSE ADVISORY BOARD P4EETING MINUTES OF AUGUST 4, 1988 PAGE 4 • ITEM N0. 7: DRAWING FOR THE TEE MARKER PLACEMENT SIGNS: Alex told the Board that Nina had called everyone that purchased a marker to let them know that the drawing would be done at 1:00 at today's meeting, so if someone wanted to be present for the drawing they were welcome.
