OTHER OPTIONS FOR THE TEXAS WORKS STEEL <br />. . - <br />MILL-OTHER'THAN THE'SALE OF.SUCH MILL TO THE COUNTRY OF IRAQ; <br />DIRECTING .A'COPY'OF SAID RESOLUT,IONTOBE'DELIVERED TO VARIOUS <br />. - <br />~EGrSLATORS ijEPRESENTING THE'LA'PORTE-AREA~ AND PROVIDING FOR AN <br />EFFECTIVE DATE,THEREOF~' <br /> <br />.. " , . . .. _ . . <br /> <br />WHEREAS, USX has proposed to sell to the County of Iraq its <br />Texas '.Works' St~el Mill; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Texas Works Steel Mill is not only a valuable <br />asset ~Q. the community o( La Porte, but also a valuable asset to <br />our nation as a part of the steel making capacity of the United <br />States; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the City of La Porte understands that Iraq is not <br />the only '~ntity th~t is interested in buying the steel mill, <br />there being other potential American purchasers which would keep <br />the Texas Works in this area; and such potential purchasers are <br />willing to-meet or exceed the offer from Iraq; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the City of La Porte further understands that at <br />least~~w9 of.these, potential American purchasers are willing to <br />structure their purchase in a way that would ease any concerns <br />that USX may have over domestic competition in steel production; <br />and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the City of La Porte further believes it is <br />inaccurate.to call, the Texas Works Steel Mill old and outmoded, <br />as only one other plant'of the type of the Texas Works has been <br />built since the completion of the Texas Works; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Texas .Works Steel Mill was updated in the early <br />1980's:by -the means of computerization which indicates it is not <br />outmoded; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, a sale of.this plant to a -purchaser willing to keep <br />it .loq~t~d .in .Texas would promote both local and national <br />concerns and .allow USX to dispose of a plant that it no longer <br />wishes to own. <br /> <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL <br />. .. .. . ,OF THE CI'rY' OF LA' PORTE, TEXAS . <br /> <br />.Section 1. .That the City Council of the City of La Porte, <br />Texas', hereby urges and encou rages USX to not sell the Texas <br />Works Steel.Mill to Iraq, but instead .pursue other options which <br />~ould result in,the ~ale of this plant to a purchaser who would <br />keep it within the area. . <br /> <br />Section 2. That the City Council of the City of La Porte, <br />Texas~ further urges and encourages the Legislators representing <br />~his area to protect both local and national interests by seeing <br />that the Texas Works Steel Mill is kept in the United States. <br /> <br />Section 1. The City Secretary is hereby directed to send <br />copies of this Resolution to all Legislators representing this <br />a re a . <br /> <br />Section 4.
