Y • ,
MINUTES - RDGULliR MEET]NG
LA PORTS CITY COR~5SIOAt - b?AY 1,1952
11:05 A. M.
Regular meeting of the City Commission was called to order by Mayor B~4.D.
Burgs.n with the following members and city officials present: Commissioners
L. R. ~igby and Robert A. ~"Thite, Supt. of Public ti~orls W.A.Ar},h~~ ~.d City
Clerk J. E. Muldoon.
Mayom Burgin extended thanks to ti~Tm. P. Jones for all he had done for t he
Commission and the City of La Porte, and assured the Commission that he would
cooperate with them to the fullest, and hoped they would do the same v~ri.th
him in an informal and friendly manner. He acknowledged that there would. be
errors, but he would be happy to correct them when called to his attention.
He felt that there is lots to be learned, which they will probably learn in
the hard way, but assured the people of La Porte that he would at all times
work for the best interest of a11, anal would do everything to carry out the
wishes of the people, and try to the best of his ability to males La Porte
a better place in which to live.
Commissioner ~.te then assured the Mayor that he would work with him and
Commissioner Rigby. He stated that less than twelve years ago, Pasadena was
smaller than La Porte. The evidence of the growth of Pasadena speaks fcr
itself. This growth was attained t o a degree by things that just happy-ned,
but I t hink to a much greater degree because the people decided they would
have to work together in order to make abetter toaun. e'Tith the advent of the
Tunnel, and the ~ospect of industrial, commercial and residential growth,
La Porte today stands on the threshold of real progress. But we will not be
able to make the strides f onward that z}ae should unless we unite, unless we
agree to push aside any selfish interests, unless we will quit playing "sides"
anal lay down our "arms" ~d won k together for t he good of all. Therefore,
I make this plea far unity, and I am sure that Mayor Burgin and Comrai.ssioner
Rigby join me in asking that we join hands and work together for our fawn.
ft'1r. Rigby stated that we all make mistakes, but we can also learn and correct
our mistakes. He also stated that he got along easily with people, and he
saw no reason why he could not get along with Mayor Burgin ar~d Comm3.ssioner
WYLite. He also stated he would endeavor to warrant the t rust the people have
placed in him, and want them to feel free to present at any time, their prob-
lems, and he will receive them with an open mind.
Motion by ,`lhite, second by Rigby, to appo5nt officers as follows, at their
present salaries:
J. E. Muldoon ------------- __-----------
~~t, A. Arthur -----------------
'~Talter M.Roberson -----------------------._._-
J. O.Rollins --------__~.--------------------
rr. A. Stabs, Jr. ~..-_~~------------~~
Vance Turner --------------------~_-r_____
City Clerk
Supt. of Public `'forks
Chief of Police
T~'ire Chie;P
~,ixe Marshall
Inspector
and instructed the City Clerl; to have bonds ready at their next regular meeting.
Carried.
