<br /> . e <br /> . <br /> PREFACE <br />" Many cities have passed ordinances adopting the Recommended <br /> Building Code of the National Board of Fire Underwriters by title. <br /> This power to adopt by title is sometimes given through a general <br /> enabling act of the legislature, in other cases by specific enactment <br /> applying only to one city, and in other cases it is assumed by the <br /> city to be its right. <br /> The form in which ordinances, by an enabling act or otherwise, <br /> are introduced into local legislative bodies is generally prescribed <br /> . either by a general state statute or by the municipality's charter. <br /> ~ The language to be used in the enacting clause is usually included in <br /> / <br /> such statute or charter. <br /> It is the policy of the National Board of Fire Underwriters ~o <br /> provide any city adopting the National Building Code-Abbreviated <br /> Edition-with 50 copies without cost, and as many other copies of <br /> the Code as may be desired at a nominal price per copy, which is less <br />I than cost of publication. <br />I <br />I <br />, <br />I <br />I <br /> .. <br />\ <br />1 <br /> ~ <br /> . <br /> V <br /> <br />e <br /> <br />.' <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />including garages) and exclng in area 10,000 square feet <br />of fireproof construction or semifireproof construction. <br />(b). Buildings over 2 stories in height used for the manu- <br />facture, sale or storage of combustible goods or merchandise (not in- <br />cluding garages) and exceeding in area 7,500 square feet when of <br />types of construction other than fireproof construction and semi- <br />fireproof construction. <br />(c). Buildings exceeding 2 stories in height ,Or in excess of <br />2,000 square feet in area on any floor above the first or ground floor, <br />hereafter erected or altered, so that suitable access, as defined below, <br />to each story above the basement is not provided on at least one <br />side of the building. Suitable access shall be deemed as requiring <br />a usable opening through the wall at each story at least 32 inches <br />wide, 48 inches high and with the sill not more than 32 inches above <br />the floor; the openings shall be so spaced that there will be one <br />opening for each 50 feet of frontage. <br />(d). Garages exceeding 6 stories in height. <br />(e). Garages for storage of loaded commercial trucks, exceed- <br />ing 2,000 square feet in area and of other than fireproof construction. <br />(f). Bus garages exceeding 2 stories in height. <br />(g). Basement garages housing more than 3 motor vehicles. <br />(h). Garages located in buildings in which one or mO,re stories <br />or parts thereof above such garages are occupied for other purposes <br />when such garages have a capacity of 20 or more passenger auto- <br />mobiles, or are used as bus terminals for 3 or more buses, or are used <br />for the storage a,nd loading of 2 or more trucks. <br />(i) Basements having an area exceeding 3500 square feet. <br />when used for the manufacture, sale or storage of combustible <br />goods or merchandise, except that'in public buildings, institutional <br />buildings and residence buildings, the automatic sprinkler equip- <br />ments will be required only in such portions as are used for storage <br />purposes or as work shops. <br />(j). In buildings occupied as a place of assembly and having <br />a stage arranged for theatrical, operatic or similar purposes, ap- <br />proved automatic sprinkler equipments shall be provided under the <br />roof of the stage, under the gridiron, the rigging loft and fly and tie <br />galleries, under the stage, in dressing rooms, scene docks, workshops <br />and storage rooms. <br />(k).
