<br />. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />-l.42 - <br /> <br />SECTION/37 . CIIDNEYS, FLUES AND VENTS. <br />I. - Flue connecti ons 'required. Every heating apparatus or heat <br /> <br />,. <br /> <br />.4t producing appliance requiring a flue connection shall be connected with a flue <br />conforming to the provisior..s of this section or of section 38. This shall not <br />include electric ~ppliancef'; gas appliances, except as specifically required <br />in section 38, nor oil firE~d appliances especially designed for use without <br /> <br />flue comection. <br /> <br />2. USE OF NONCONFORMING FLUES. Flues not conforming to the re- <br /> <br />quirements of this section for chinmeys, nor with generally accepted good <br />practice for metal smokestacks, nor VIi. th section 38, vents f or gas appliances, <br /> <br />shall n,ot be used unless l:_sted by Underwriters r Laboratories, Inc., and in- <br /> <br />, <br /> <br />stalled in full compliance with the lis~ing and the manufacturer 's instructions, <br />and such use is approved b:{ the bUilding official. <br /> <br />3. CONSmUCTION . <br /> <br />(a) Chimneys sh,ul extend at least 3 feet above the highest point <br />where they pass through thB roof of the buil~ng and at least 2 feet higher <br />than any ridge within 10 ft:!et of such chinmey. <br />(b) No chinmey .3hall be corbeled from a wall more than 6 inches; <br /> <br />nor s hall a chinmey be cor")eled from a wall which is less than 12 inches in <br /> <br />thiclmess unless it projects equally on each side of the wall; provided that <br /> <br />in the second story of 2-story dwellings corbelling of chinmeys on the exterior <br /> <br />of the enclosing walls may equal the l'lJ'all thicmess. In every case the cor- <br /> <br />, <br /> <br />beling shall not exceed on3 inch projection !:or each course of brick projected. <br /> <br />(c) No change i:1 the size or shape of a chinmey, where the chiIlxney <br /> <br />passes through the roof, s:J.all be made within a distance of 6 inches above or <br /> <br />below the roof joists or rafters. <br /> <br />4. CHIMNEIS FOR HEATING APPLIANCES, LON HEAT INDUSTRIAL APPLIANCES <br />AND FOR TABLE INCDJmA roRS. <br /> <br />(a) Chimneys for stoves, coolci.ng ranges, warm air, hot water and <br /> <br />low pressure steam. heating furnaces,' fireplaCes" and low heat industrial appli- <br /> <br />ances, other than chimneys for incinerators of nonportable type, shall be con- <br /> <br />struction of solid masonry' units or of reinforced concrete. The walls shall be <br /> <br />properly bonded or tied with corrosion resistant metal anchors. In dw'ellings <br /> <br />t <br /> <br />and buildings of like heating requirements the thickness of the chimney vfalls <br />shall be not less than 4 inches. In other buildings the thickness shall be mt <br />less than 8 inches, except that rubble stone masonry shall be not less than 12 <br /> <br />inches thick. <br />
