Biochemical Oxygen Demand ( BOD) - The quantity of oxygen utilized <br />in the biochemical oxidation of organic matter under standard laboratory <br />procedure, five(5) days at 20 degrees centigrade expressed in terms of <br />mass and concentration [ milligram per liter ( mgll ) ]. <br /> <br />E. Categorical Pretreatment Standard or Categorical Standard - Any <br />regulation containing pollutant discharge limits promulgated by the U.S. <br />EPA in accordance with sections 270 (b) and ( c ) of the act ( 33 U.S.C. <br />1317 ) which apply to a specific category of industrial users and which <br />appear in 40 CFR Chapter I, Subchapter N, parts 405-471. <br /> <br />F. Certificate of Occupancy - A permit showing that ~e industry or business <br />has complied with this ordinance and has been shown to have only <br />sanitary waste discharge. <br /> <br />G. City - The City of La Porte or the City Council of La Porte. <br /> <br />H. Chemical Oxygen Demand ( COD ) - The measure of oxygen consumed <br />from a chemical oxidant, expressed as mgll. <br /> <br />I. Color - The optical density at the visual wavelength of maximum <br />absorption, relative to distilled water. One hundred percent ( 100 % ) <br />transmittance is equivalent to zero ( 0.0) optical density. <br /> <br />J. Composite Sample - A sample composed of two or more discrete <br />samples. The aggregate sample will reflect the average water quality <br />covering the compo siting or sample period . <br /> <br />K. Control Authority - A POTW with an approved pretreatment program or <br />Approval authority in the absence of a POTW pretreatment program. <br /> <br />L. Director of Public Works or Director - The person designated by the City <br />of La Porte to supervise the operation of the POTW, and who is charged <br />with certain duties and responsibilities by this ordinance or hislher <br />authorized representative. <br /> <br />M. Domestic Sewage - Water-borne wastes normally discharging from the <br />sanitary conveniences, free from storm surface water, industrial wastes, <br />and in which the average concentration of total suspended solids is not <br />greater than 300mgll and BOD is not more than 250 mgll. <br /> <br />N. Domestic User (DU ) - Any industry or business discharging only <br />domestic sewage into the city sewer system. <br /> <br />O. Environmental Protection Agency or EPA - The U.S. Environmental <br />Protection Agency or, where appropriate, the term may also be used as a <br />designation for the Regional Water Management Division Director or <br />other duly authorized official of said agency. <br /> <br />4 <br />
