e

e

As indicated in the a1:ove table, the total BCDI Area and La. Porte

Elderly are alrrost 2% a1:ove the County relationship of 60/over to total

population. Because rrost elderly, low-income persons and handicapped

persons residing inthe area are on fixed or limited inCOIl'ES, transporta-

tion rrobility problems are even rrore highly severe than in densely popula-

ted County Areas.
Increasing transportation difficulties is the total lack of public

transportation and paucity of feasible alternative transportation services

in the La. Porte area. The La. Porte Area residents voted against partici-

pation in the regionally conceived Metropolitan Transit Authority. There-

fore the low- inCOIl'E, handicapped and elderly are frequently faced to pay

outrageous prices to neigborhood residents for transportation service pro-

vision. There is limited taxi service, e.g., one najor provider, but that

provider cannot transport a resident to areas outside La. Porte boundaries.

The cost of neighborhood resident providers ranges from $10 - $20 per trip

and $l.OO/rnile by taxi.

The lack of feasible alternative transportation services is exacerbated

by the sheer distance needed to be traveled to get to needed trip generators.
Table 2 indicated pri.nary center square miles within the BCDI Target Area;

TABLE 2

BCDI AREA SQUARE MILES

prirrary
Center

Baytown
La Porte- Lomax
Seabrook

Square
Miles
29.1
13.6
5.7
2.0
2.0

furgan's Point
Shore Acres
