e

e

Maxim

4.1.4 Fire Insurance Maps

In the late nineteenth century, companies began preparing maps 'for use by fire insurance
companies. These maps indicate construction materials of specific structures in developed
urban areas. With the advent of retail gasoline service stations, the approximate locations of
tanks were noted, often without AST or UST designations. These maps were updated and
expanded geographically periodically through the twentieth century~

The site is not located in an area typically referenced by the Fire Insurance Maps.
Consequently, Fire Insurance, Maps were not requested for this project.

4.1.5 Historical Interviews

No historical interviews were conducted for this report.

4.1.6 Historical Summary

A review of Section 4.0. indicated that, historically, the site is a vacant land. The site has
been owned by the Houston Coca-Cola Bottling Company, a retail business, a realty company,
and several individuals. ,The adjoining properties tO'the north, south, and east appear to be
commercial developments. The surrounding areas to the east appear to be the residential
areas.

, Review or historical information, as presented above, did not reveal potential recognized
environmental conditions.

4.2 Physical Setting Information

4.2; 1 ' Topography

The 19827.5 minute USGS Topographic Quadrangle Map of La Porte, Texas indicates the
site is located on level terrain. ''PIe general direction of surface water drainage appears to be
toward Galveston Bay located approximately 40.00 feet southeast of the site. Surface elevation
for the site is approximately 20. f~t above mean sea level.

4.2.2 Soil Conditions

According to the Soil Survey of H,arris County, Texas, USDA, Soil Conservation Service,
August, 1976, the site is located on the soils of the Beaumont Clay.

The Beaumont series consists, of deep, acid, 'near:ly level soils on upland coastal prairies.
These soils formed in thick beds of alkaline" marine clay. '

Typically, this soil is poorly drainC?<! and the surface ,runoff and internal drainage are very
slow. The permeability is very slow and the available water capacity is high. In some areas,
the surface cracks when the soil is dry. Rainwater enters the cracks rapidly, but ,then moves
very slowly into'the soil. The .risk of corrosion to uncoated steel is high.
