Many <br />of these solutions may be appropriate for storm surge suppression in the region <br />surrounding Galveston Bay, including Bay Area Houston. Seal and BAHEP’s <br />C.A. Shields followed up by meeting with Dr. William Merrell, Texas A&M <br />University at Galveston, and retired Rear Adm. Robert Smith III, Texas A&M <br />University at Galveston president and CEO, to discuss coastal storm surge <br />protection projects along the upper Texas coast. <br />BAHEP Initiatives in Maritime Education Curriculum Development <br />Collaborations with the Port of Houston Authority, University of Houston –Clear <br />Lake, Texas A&M University –Galveston, San Jacinto College Districtandlocal <br />independent school districts haveresulted in maritime education curricula <br />implementation at the high school and college levels to meet the growing <br />workforce demand in the maritime industry. BAHEP initiatives during this report <br />period are summarized as follows: <br />Port of Houston Authority Maritime Education Initiative <br />- <br />BAHEP’s Dan Seal attended the Port of Houston Authority (PHA) Maritime <br />Education Committee meeting to provide guidance on PHA’s initiative to <br />implement maritime education curricula into high school and college level <br />programs. The PHA initiative is addressing the maritime workforce skill <br />shortage in the region. At a subsequent meeting, Seal and C.A Shields of <br />BAHEP attended another PHA maritime education curriculum development <br />meetingat Stephen F. Austin High Schoolin the City of Houston. Following <br />the work session, attendees were given a tour of the school’s new maritime <br />education class rooms. <br />Industry Support for Maritime Education Programs <br />- <br />BAHEPattended the Port of Houston Authority maritime meeting at the <br />Houston Pilots Facilityto provide advice and guidance on maritime curriculum <br />development and industry support for maritime education programs. <br />Yacht Brokers Association Hears Economic Forecast from BAHEP <br />Dan Seal of BAHEP presented an annual economic forecast to the members ofthe <br />Gulf Coast Yacht Brokers Association at the Lakewood Yacht Club in Seabrook. <br />6 <br /> <br />
