Armand Bayou Watershed Partnership Formed <br />The Armand Bayou Watershed Partnership (ABWP) recently held its kickoff <br />meeting. The watershed encompasses 60 square miles in southeast Harris County <br />from Beltway 8 to State Highway225to Interstate 45 feeding into Galveston Bay. <br />The meeting incorporated the Armand Bayou Watershed Partnership as a <br />501(c)(3) under the leadership of the Board of DirectorsChairTim Tietjens,City <br />of La Porte Planning director;Vice Chair Diane Hume; Secretary/Treasurer Tom <br />Kartrude; and Watershed Coordinator Linda Shead.The vision of the partnership <br />is to “take care of the bayou and watershed to make it a great place to live, work, <br />and play” through cooperation, collaboration, and consensus. BAHEP, a member <br />of ABWP, will work with its members to promote the vision and goals of this <br />very worthwhile endeavor. <br />STEM Education Conference –STEM Workforce Panel <br />Bob Mitchell, along with Lee Rector, director of the Texas Workforce Investment <br />Council, and five other prominent individuals involved in science, technology, <br />engineering and mathematics (STEM)and workforce development, sat on the <br />STEM Workforce Panel as part of the 2012 STEM Education Conference on Jan. <br />12, 2012. The conference, held in Galveston at the Moody Gardens, focused on <br />skills development for educators. <br />EllingtonGrowth Continues Through BAHEP Initiatives <br />BAHEP’s initiatives during this report period to assist the Houston Airport <br />System and the military organizations at Ellington Field are summarized below: <br />Orientation for Gen. Peter Lennon at Ellington Airport <br />- <br />Dan Seal of BAHEP and John Martinec, chairman of BAHEP’s Ellington Field <br />Taskforce committee, participated in an orientation meeting with Brig.Gen. <br />Peter Lennon at the Houston Airport System’s administration building at <br />Ellington Airport.Gen. Lennon assumed command of the 1st Mission <br />Command Training Brigade, 75th Mission Command Training Division <br />headquartered at Joint Reserve Base Ellington Fieldon November 6, 2011. <br />Military Priorities at Ellington Airport <br />- <br />Dan Seal facilitated a meeting between Texas Military Preparedness <br />Commissioner Tom Duncavage and John Martinec, chairman of BAHEP’s <br />Ellington Field Taskforce committee to discuss military priorities at Ellington <br />Field. Retired U.S. Coast Guard Cmdr.Gene Tulich, chairman of the Houston <br />Military Affairs Committee also participated in the meeting. <br />Coast Guard Hosts Groundbreaking at Ellington Airport <br />- <br />BAHEP’s Dan Seal attended the groundbreakingfor the new Coast Guard <br />Sector Houston headquarters facility at Ellington Field on Jan. 31, 2012.This <br />building will be a new,four-story, $43 million complex which will house 300 <br />Coast Guard personnel.The facility is expected to be complete in June 2013. <br />Capt.James Whitehead, Coast Guard Sector commander and captain of the Port <br />of Houston-Galveston, mentioned contributions by BAHEP’s Ellington Field <br />Task Force in his remarks. <br />Tour for Congressman Pete Olson’s Legislative Assistant <br />- <br />Dan Seal participated in an Ellington Airport tour for Congressman Pete Olsen’s <br />legislative assistant, Tom Divine.
