Over the past
decade, we have seen a substantial increase in the use of digital devices by criminals.
Digital devices such as computers, tablets, cellular phones, flash drives, gaming
consoles, DVR's, global positioning devices, routers, digital cameras, etc are all in use by
criminal actors. With forensically sound conditions, methodologies, and equipment
investigators can use the information stored and captured in these devices to assist in
the investigative and prosecutorial processes. Ninety one percent of adults and seventy
eight percent of teens own some type of device named above. This has resulted in an
explosion of social media and internet use. Unfortunately, criminals have not missed out
on this growth of technology. They utilize the same technologies to support and
perpetrate their criminal acts. Many use such technologies in the field of child
pornography, human trafficking and drug trafficking. As for child porn, eighty five
percent of convicted child porn offenders admitted to using such technologies in their
criminal acts. Also, drug dealers keep contact information for supplier and potential
customers, burglary rings use it to communicate with lookouts and in fencing stolen
property, fraud suspects use it to steal and sell credit card information and make
fraudulent purchases, and sex offenders use it to stalk and harass their victims, as a few
examples. This criminal digital evidence may be captured by investigators if they have
the right devices and equipment to do so. This includes emails, word files, spreadsheets,
text messages, GPS coordinates, images, videos, audio, and deleted information. Such
evidence is captured to establish criminal intent, identify suspects, establish
relationships and establish time lines. This equipment is necessary in our changing world
of technology and in strengthening cases for prosecution in Harris County courts, in
Ќ
DƩğƓƷ bǒƒĬĻƩ ЋЏВЌЋЉЋ
