The activity of influencing people to cooperate toward some goal which <br />they come to find desirable. Followers of a true leader must get sat- <br />• isfaction and self-fulfillment. <br />3. Personality in action under group conditions. <br />TYPES OF LEADERS <br />There are three types of leaders in today's business. <br />1. Autocratic - This "boss" type had been outmoded for many years but is <br />still found too frequently. There is only one occasion when a leader <br />may need to act in an autocratic manner - in an emergency. <br />2. Laissez faire - This type~of supervisor is really no leader because <br />he or she allows followers to do as they please while failing to sti- <br />mulate and guide them toward desirable business goals. <br />3. Democratic - This type is a true leader. He or she thinks in terms <br />of "we" and plans how to stimulate cooperation and teamwork. <br />LEADERS - BORN OR MADE? <br />Leaders are made' <br />1. Any person of normal intelligence and with a sincere desire to be of <br />service to people can acquire the skill of leadership <br />2. Personality qualities and Supervising skills can be improved or devel- <br />oped. <br />3. Skill in supervising people must be the result of sound and logical <br />thinking and fair, considerate and sympathetic feelings toward people. <br />• CHARACTERISTICS OF EFFECTIVE LEADERS <br />There are eight main characteristics for effective leadership. <br />1. Leaders maintain respect - The leader must create the proper relation- <br />ship with subordinates and earn their respect in order to maintain <br />their willingness to accept authority. <br />2. Leaders work effectively with people - The leader becomes genuienely <br />interested in others, and encourages others to talk about themselves. <br />3. Leaders are responsive to the needs and desires•of others - The leader <br />is sincere and a good listener. <br />4. Leaders are knowledgeable - The leader is expected to understand the <br />total situation and have all the general information. <br />S. Leaders should possess superior motivation - A leader must have an in- <br />tense desire to get things done and involve others. <br />6. Leaders are inspired and enthusiastic - Enthusiasm is contagious! <br />7. Leaders tap and use every resource - A good leader will realize that <br />every member. has something to contribute and will tap that resource. <br />8. Leaders capitalize on the organizational environment and the leader- <br />ship of others - The effective leader utilizes the potential of other <br />leaders; He/she learns from them, profits from their mistakes and en- <br />larges on their successes. <br />Whether you are a Leader of a Follower, FBLA-PBL is for you!
