Miller, President and Chief Executive Officer <br />ORGANIZATION FBLA-PBL, Inc. is a nonprofit 501(c)(3), vocational education organization of <br /> students pursuing careers in business or business education. It is composed of <br /> three divisions: FBLA for high school students; PBL for postsecondary students; <br /> and an alumni division formed from both groups. <br />HISTORY The FBLA concept was developed in 1937 by Hamden L. Forkner of Teachers <br /> College, Columbia University, New York City. In the fall of 1940, official spon- <br /> sorship of FBLA was accepted by the National Council for Business Education. <br /> On February 3, 1942, the first chapter was organized in Johnson City, <br /> Tennessee. The association has been recognized by the Freedoms Foundation <br /> and the Horatio Alger Awards committee. <br />PURPOSE ~ FBLA-PBL, Inc. is committed to helping students bridge the gap between <br /> classroom and office world by providing students with the opportunity to <br /> learn, first-hand, about the business community. <br /> Organizational goals include: <br /> • promoting competent, aggressive business leadership <br /> • understanding American business enterprise <br /> • establishing career goals <br /> • encouraging scholarship <br /> • promoting efficient financial management <br /> • developing character and self-confidence <br />MEMBERS There are 200,000 alive members in 8,500 local chapters located throughout <br /> all 50 states, American Samoa, Canal Zone, Guam, Puerto Rico, Vrgin Islands <br /> and Germany. <br />S~UCTURE The association is organized on the local, state, regional and national levels. <br /> Local chapters operate under the guidance of teacher/advisers and advisory <br /> councils composed of school officials, business people and community <br /> representatives. <br />State advisers help coordinate chapter activities and report to the national <br />organization, located near Washington, D.C. <br />The FBLA-PBL Congressional Advisory Committee is comprised of thirteen <br />distinguished U.S senators and representatives: `it was formed in 1982 to <br />improve communications with the Congres~;of the United States, to provide <br />direct access to individual legislators who actlv"ely support FBLA-PBL, and to <br />foster wider recognition of the association's programs. <br />The FBLA-PBL Foundation was formed in the summer of 1982 to extend the <br />association's educational purposes, undertake related special projects and <br />establish a secure financial structure. The chairman of the Foundation is U.S. <br />Trade Representative, Ambassador William Brock. <br />Future Travel, the association's full service travel agency, opened its doors for <br />business in January 1983. Although Future Travel is a separate, profit-making <br />entity, the profits realized are returned to FBLA-PBL, Inc., its sole stockholder. <br />
