0 • <br />Minutes, Re -Districting Public Hearing <br />and La Porte City Council <br />August 12, 1991, Page 6 <br />Mayor Malone called the meeting back to order at 6:38 p.m. and <br />asked for a recommendation from the Re -Districting Committee. <br />Chairperson H. P. Pfeiffer stated "The Re -Districting <br />Committee stands with their recommendation, however we <br />certainly have no problem whatsoever with any changes Council <br />might decide to make." <br />Mayor Malone said, "The Re -Districting Committee is <br />recommending adoption of the map as presented without <br />changes." Mayor Malone said he appreciated the hard work the <br />committee had done. Mr. Pfeiffer praised his committee and <br />stated all members had worked very hard. The assembly gave <br />a round of applause to the Re -Districting Committee. <br />Mayor Malone asked if any of the Council had any comments at <br />this time. Councilperson Porter said he appreciates the work <br />the committee had done and he was satisfied with the <br />committee's recommendation and he will support the <br />recommendation. <br />Councilperson McLaughlin said he would like to show his <br />appreciation for the work the committee had done and stated <br />he too would support their recommendation. <br />Councilperson Thrower said he would like to thank the <br />committee for the long hours of work they had put into this <br />and stated he would support their recommendation. <br />Councilperson Gay said he appreciates all of the committee and <br />the service which they performed for the City of La Porte, but <br />he could not approve of the map the Re -Districting Committee <br />had presented. He said if Council would make the changes he <br />suggested on his map, he would accept the recommendation. He <br />further stated "If those changes which I made are not <br />accepted, I will have to call the Justice Department to get <br />the modifications." He said he believes his map would assure <br />a minority would be elected in District 4, but he felt the <br />committee map would not assure a minority would be elected in <br />District 4. <br />
