~ • <br />RESOLOTION <br />A RESOLUTION OF THE TEXAS MUNICIPAL LEAGUE CONCERNING RE-DISTRICTING <br />FOR CONGRESSIONAL, STATE OF TEXAS, AND TEXAS POLITICAL SUBDIVISIONS. <br />WHEREAS, the State of Texas and various political subdivisions <br />of the State of Texas, including cities, counties, and school <br />districts, are required by the Federal Voting Rights Act, as <br />amended, to re-district congressional, state senatorial, state <br />House of Representatives, and political subdivivions such as cities, <br />counties, and some school districts, are required to re-district <br />based on the results of the 1990 Federal Census; and <br />WHEREAS, severe disruptions in the continuity of representation <br />by incumbent elected officials can occur as a result of such re- <br />districting: <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE TEXAS MUNICIPAL LEAGUE, <br />THAT: <br />The Texas Legislature, in connection with its re-districting of <br />Texas seats in the U.S. House of Representatives, Texas Senatorial, <br />Texas House of Representatives, other statewide boards and <br />commissions, and political subdivisions of the State of Texas, such <br />as cities, counties, and some school districts, are urged to conduct <br />their respective re-districtings in such a manner as to not deprive <br />incumbent elected officials of their existing districts, or a <br />district substantially similar to their existing district, in order <br />to lessen disruption and provide continuity of representation of the <br />citizens of such governmental entities. <br />PASSED AND ADOPTED this the day of October, 1991, at a <br />regular meeting of the Board of Directors of the Texas Municipal <br />League. <br />(Submitted by the City of La Porte) <br />
