Mr. Paulissen challenged surrounding communities to <br />show their support of La Porte's Centennial by entering into <br />the beard growing contest. <br />8. Mrs. Betty Waters addressed Council regarding a hearing she <br />had attended at Commissioners Court. The hearing was <br />regarding whether or not to renew a Wine and Beer Retailer on <br />Premise for Lomax Food and Grocery. There have been numerous <br />complaints on this establishment, and a petition had been <br />presented to Commissioners Court asking that the permit not <br />be approved. Thanks to Council's help and interest, the <br />permit was not approved. <br />9. Council considered an ordinance calling the Regular Annual <br />Election. <br />The City Attorney read: ORDINANCE 1808 - AN ORDINANCE CALLING <br />THE REGULAR ANNUAL ELECTION OF THE CITY OF LA PORTE; CALLING <br />A RUN-OFF ELECTION, IF NECESSARY; DESIGNATING ELECTION <br />PRECINCTS AND POLLING PLACES; PROVIDING FOR THE USE OF VOTING <br />MACHINES; APPOINTING ELECTION OFFICIALS; PROVIDING FOR METHOD <br />AND DATES OF EARLY VOTING; PROVIDING FOR AN EARLY VOTING <br />BALLOT BOARD; PROVIDING FOR RETURN AND CANVASS OF VOTES OF <br />SAID ELECTION; PROVIDING FOR NOTICE; PROVIDING FOR FILING <br />DEADLINE AND FILING FEES FOR CANDIDATES; PROVIDING A SAVINGS <br />CLAUSE; FINDING COMPLIANCE WITH THE OPEN MEETINGS LAW; AND <br />PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE HEREOF. <br />Motion was made by Councilperson Skelton to adopt Ordinance <br />1808 as read by the City Attorney. Second by Councilperson <br />McLaughlin. The motion carried, 8 ayes and 0 nays. <br />Ayes: Councilpersons Sutherland, Cooper, Thrower, <br />McLaughlin, Gay, Skelton, Clarke and Mayor Malone <br />Nays: None <br />10. Council considered an ordinance naming a member to fill an <br />unexpired term on the La Porte Zoning Board of Adjustment. <br />The Mayor announced that this item would be taken to executive <br />session under V.A.T.S. - Article 6252-17, Section 2(G) <br />(Personnel). <br />il. Council considered an ordinance reappointing Patricia Muston <br />as City of La Porte representative for the Southeast Texas <br />Housing Finance Corporation. <br />
