City Council Minutes - May 9, 2000 — Page 2 <br />5. Council considered approving an ordinance declaring the results of the election held in <br />the City of La Porte on May 6, 2000, for the election of Mayor; Councilperson District 2; <br />and Councilperson District 3. <br />City Attorney read: ORDINANCE 2000-2404 — AN ORDINANCE DECLARING THE <br />RESULTS OF THE ELECTION HELD IN THE CITY OF LA PORTE ON MAY 6, <br />2000, FOR THE ELECTION MAYOR; COUNCILPERSON DISTRICT 2; AND <br />COUNCILPERSON DISTRICT 3; FINDING COMPLIANCE WITH THE OPEN <br />MEETINGS LAW; PROVIDING AN EFFECTIVE DATE HEREOF. <br />City Attorney Knox Askins read the results of the final official canvass of votes at the <br />May 6, 2000, General Election. In the race for Mayor, Norman Malone was unopposed <br />with 656 votes. In the race for District 2; Chuck Engelken 131, Nick Barrera 45. In the <br />race for District 3, Howard Ebow was unopposed with 99 votes. Mayor Norman Malone <br />was re-elected. Councilperson Engelken was re-elected. Councilperson Howard Ebow <br />was re-elected. <br />Motion was made by Councilperson Young to approve Ordinance 2000-2404 as <br />presented by Mr. Askins. Second by Councilperson Clarke. The motion carried. <br />Ayes: Sutherland, Engelken, Ebow, Griffiths, Porter, Gay, Young, Clarke, and Mayor <br />Malone <br />Nays: None <br />Abstain: None <br />6. Judge J. B. Willamson administered the Oath of Office to Mayor Norman Malone. <br />Mayor Norman Malone administered the Oath of Office to District 2 Councilperson <br />Chuck Engelken and District 3 Councilperson Howard Ebow. <br />7. Council considered approving an ordinance appointing a member of City Council to <br />serve as mayor Pro-Tem for the period of May 10, 2000 through May 8, 2001. <br />City Attorney read: ORDINANCE 2000-2405 — AN ORDINANCE APPOINTING A <br />MEMBER OF THE CITY COUNCIL TO SERVE AS MAYOR PRO-TEM OF THE <br />CITY OF LA PORTE, FOR THE PERIOD MAY 10, 2000, THROUGH MAY 8, 2000; <br />FINDING COMPLIANCE WITH THE OPEN MEETINGS LAW; PROVIDING AN <br />EFFECTIVE DATE HEREOF. <br />Motion was made by Councilperson Young to approve Ordinance 2000-2405 nominatins; <br />Councilperson Jerry Clarke as Mayor Pro Tem. Second by Councilperson Porter. The <br />motion carried. <br />Ayes: Sutherland, Engelken, Ebow, Griffiths, Porter, Gay, Young, and Mayor Malone <br />Nays: None <br />Abstain: Clarke <br />8. Council considered approving an ordinance authorizing issuance of refund of <br />overpayment to Huntsman Polymers Corporation. <br />
