City Council Minutes — May 9, 2000 — Page 4 <br />Purchasing Manager Susan Kelley presented report to Council on a City <br />marquee. Funds to purchase the marquee would be funded through the <br />hotel/motel capital improvement project account. Ms. Kelley noted she had <br />visited with the La Porte Independent School District in order to place the <br />marquee on school property. In return, the school district will be able to utilize <br />the marquee for citywide messages. <br />Council indicated they would like to see more than one location for marquees. <br />Workshop adjourned and the special called meeting re -convened at 6:55 P.M. <br />12. Council considered approval or other action authorizing purchase of EZ Marquee, Model <br />#EZ4076 from Spectrum Corporation as sole source vendor. <br />Motion was made by Councilperson Clarke to table this item until after the Council <br />Retreat. Second by Councilperson Griffiths. The motion carried. <br />Ayes: Engelken, Ebow, Griffiths, Porter, Gay, Young, Clarke, and Mayor Malone <br />Nays: None <br />Abstain: None <br />13. ADMINISTRATIVE REPORTS <br />Assistant City Manager John Joerns reminded Council of the following events: <br />A. May 10, 2000 — Library Groundbreaking — 2:00 P.M. <br />B. May meeting dates — Special Called Workshop Meeting May 15, 2000 — Regular <br />Called Meeting May 22, 2000 <br />C. May 16, 2000 — Traffic Hump meeting — City Hall Council Chambers. <br />D. May 17, 2000 —Chamber of Commerce Luncheon <br />E. May 29, 2000 — City observes Memorial Day Holiday <br />F. Mayor Malone reminded Mr. Joerns the Council Retreat has been set for July 8, <br />2000 at City Hall Council Chambers. <br />14. COUNCIL ACTION <br />Councilpersons Engelken, Ebow, Griffiths, Porter, Gay, Young, Clarke, and Mayor <br />Malone brought items to Council's attention. <br />Mayor Malone's comments: <br />Mayor Malone informed Council that he had received a letter that disturbed him. The <br />letter criticized the council regarding the Port of Houston. The City of La Porte has <br />position paper concerning the proposed Port expansion. The presentation by Dana Olivo <br />at the last council meeting regarding the Port of Houston is an issue the majority of the <br />council does not want to participate in.
