La Porte Police Department
rd
3001 North 23Street
La Porte, Texas 77571
281-471-3810 Fax: 281-470-1590
Citizen Award of Merit
On Thursday 09/27/2012, at approx 5:30 AM, officers from La Porte Police
Department were dispatched to the 9500 block of Spencer Hwy in reference to a
reckless driver. While en route to the area, responding officers received an update
that the car had crashed and was on fire.
Upon arrival at the scene, officers observed a vehicle in a private parking lot fully
engulfed in flames. The involved vehicle had been traveling at a high rate of speed
and had struck several curbs and business signs before becoming air-born and coming
to rest in the parking lot. The driver of the vehicle was incapacitated and remained in
the vehicle as it began to smoke and catch fire.
Officers learned that the accident had been witness by a Mr. Daniel Silvas of La Porte.
Mr.Silvas had turned his vehicle around and drove to the scene of the accident in an
attempt to render aid to the driver. Observing that the vehicle was smoking and on
fire, Mr. Silvas, at great risk to his own safety, ran to the burning vehicle, forced the
driver’s side door open, removed the incapacitated driver from the vehicle, and carried
him to safety. This was all done just moments before the vehicle was fully engulfed
in flames. The victim was later transported to an area the hospital where he was
treated for burns, but survived the ordeal with relatively minor injury.
The investigating officer was able to retrieve video of the daring rescue, which was
captured by security cameras from a nearby business. The events depicted on the
video are quite breathe taking and make it clear that, had it not been for the
courageous actions of Mr. Silvas, the driver of the vehicle would have perished in the
fire.
It is for this reason that our City is honored today to recognize Mr. Daniel Silvas
conspicuous bravery and heroism in service to the La Porte community.
Corby AlexanderKenith Adcox
City ManagerChief of Police
