REQUEST FOR CITY COUNCIL AGENDA ITEM <br /> Agenda Date Requested: March 14, 2011 Budget <br /> Requested By: Jeff Suggs Source of Funds: <br /> Department: OEM Account Number: <br /> Report: X Resolution: Ordinance: Amount Budgeted: <br /> Exhibits: Grant Agreement Amount Requested: <br /> Exhibits: Budgeted Item: YES NO <br /> Exhibits <br /> SUMMARY & RECOMMENDATION <br /> The La Porte, Morgan's Point, and Shoreacres Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) has once <br /> again been awarded the Hazardous Materials Emergency Preparedness (HMEP) Planning Grant. The <br /> HMEP grant is a reimbursable federal grant program that is intended to provide financial and technical <br /> assistance to enhance State and local hazardous materials emergency planning and training. This grant is <br /> for FY 2011 and all expenditures must be submitted to the State for reimbursement by August 31, 2011. <br /> If accepted, the City of La Porte will serve as the fiscal agent for the LEPC. <br /> This grant will be used to improve the LEPC's current public awareness campaign. Some of this year's <br /> public awareness projects that will be supported by the grant include the development of an informational <br /> newsletter, as well as the purchase of needed materials for the Wally Wise elementary school program <br /> and the Shelter -in -Place program at Baker 6th Grade Campus. Other outreach projects include shelter -in- <br /> place training for new teachers, substitute teachers and local daycare centers. In addition, the grant will <br /> be used to support the annual LEPC Shelter -in -Place Drill, which will involve participation from the City, <br /> School District, and local industry. <br /> This year, the LEPC was awarded $26,000.00. The State payable amount will be $19,170.50 and the <br /> LEPC is responsible for a soft match of $6,829.50.
