<br />structures, individual picnic shelters, and larger pavilions (which provide <br />more shade and more opportunities for socialization, among other <br />things). <br />6)Improve on-site and off-site accessibility to each park by developing a <br />sidewalk improvement program to repair, replace, or install new <br />sidewalks, crosswalks, and curb cuts, in high pedestrian use <br />neighborhoods immediately surrounding the parks, schools, and other <br />community facilities. <br />7)Incorporate on-site handicap accessible walking trails that create a loop <br />around the edge of each park and connect the important amenities <br />within the park, so that users can utilize these trails for walking, running, <br />biking, roller blading, pushing strollers, among other things. <br />8)Continue to provide adequate funding in the annual capital and <br />operating budgets to enhance, improve, and maintain the existing public <br />parks, recreation, trails, and open space. <br /> <br />GOAL 109: Continue to add new park, recreation, and open space <br />areas to adequately accommodate the future needs of La Porte’s <br />residents and visitors. <br /> <br />Action and Initiatives <br />1)Consider establishing an excise tax applied to nonresidential uses on a <br />square foot basis, which will serve to generate additional revenue for the <br />purpose of expanding and improving the City’s parks and trails systems. <br />2)1)Concurrent with population growth, acquire an additional 12.16 acres of <br />Formatted:Highlight <br />neighborhood parkland and an additional 26.68 acres of community <br />Formatted:Highlight <br />parkland in the areas of deficiency by the year 2030.
