Finally, tThey also foresee the need for a third dispatcher to <br />split Fire / EMS so that 911 calls can be taken by a call-taker and <br />dispatched by another. <br /> <br />Emergency Medical Services (EMS) <br />Basic and advanced emergency life support services are provided by <br />the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Department, which covers <br /> <br />an approximate area of 75 square miles of incorporated, <br />In 2003, the City implemented a bike <br />unincorporated, and contracted areas (consisting of Bayport, <br />medic team which is used on a part- <br />Battleground, Port of Houston Barbours Cut Terminal, and <br />time basis for special events (like the <br />, and Shoreacres-). The EMS Department consists of <br />San Jacinto Day in 2006) and public <br />20 26 full-time staff and three part-time staff consisting of a Chief, <br />safety education. <br />Assistant Chief, two Captains, three shift supervisors, 1521 <br />paramedics (), EMS interns, and a billing specialist. The <br />Source: La Porte EMS Department Website. <br />EMS Department utilizes four five Mobile Intensive Care Unit <br />(MICU) ambulances in its fleet and has two MICU ambulances on-duty at all <br />times, along with three Advanced Life Support (ALS) first responder vehicles. <br />EMS HeadquartersIts only station is located at 10428 Spencer Highway and <br />was built in 2007. It consists of 4,000 square feet of living and administration <br />administrative space and 4,000 square feet of apparatus bays. EMS <br />Headquarters currently houses all three on-duty ambulances until the <br />completion of fires station 1, scheduled to be completed in late 2012, ats <br />which time one of the three on-duty ambulances will be housed at fire <br />station 1. Currently, the EMS Department has mutual aid agreements with <br />the cities of Baytown, Deer Park, and Clear Lake, which, in 2010, were <br />utilized by the City approximately 74 times and other agencies 104 times. <br />The City also staffs a part-time Bike Medic Team during special events and <br />18 <br />for public safety education. (see inset), and has specially trained tactical <br />medics that are assigned to In 2010, <br />the EMS Department responded to 3,120 emergency calls. Outside of <br />emergency response, the EMS Department offers a number of programs to <br />increase public awareness and health and safety of the community, including <br />blood pressure tracking, childhood immunizations, child safety seat <br />inspections, DWI awareness programs, and others. <br /> <br />As the community grows, the EMS Department sees its biggest challenge <br />being able to attract and retain qualified paramedics.
