~

Jt

.

.

MC6QUITO SPRAYING - Harris County sprays at regular intervals, monitors the
IT'Osquito population constantly and uses the most up-to-date nethods. By p:>licy
the least harmful insecticide is used for the most prevalent insect at the tine.
Additional spraying has been offered to BayMud by Shoreacres for a minimal fee,
an offer which has not been accepted,
The City of La Porte sprays irregularly and inefficiently, does not larvicide
and maintai.ns no studies of its o.m.
*Harris County Mosquito Oontrol District office will gladly give more information
than. you really want.)

GARBAGE PICJ<-UP - Garbage pickup in La Porte is no more frequent than in BayMud.
The City permits only plastic trash containers (which the dogs love). The LP
fee is al:x::>ut $5 IT'Onthly less than Bayt-'Iud. Their large noisy trucks and crews
would be unwelcorre in rrost of Bayl\'1ud. Many BayMud residents dispose of their
awn trash and do not pay ANY fees.

~

LAR3E TRASH PICJ<-UP - La Porte has a large trash pickup twice monthly. Many
st;r-eets can be seen wi th large trash parked on their curbs waiting, and wai tinq ,
and waiting for rerroval. BayMud residents can be relied upon to assist'thei.r
neighbors with the rerroval of large items, and this is done when requested,
neighbor to neighbor.

~

STRAY ANIMAL PICJ<-UP - Harris County Animal Oontrol has a fine reputation as very
efficient and responsive. *Houston Humane Society.
La Porte animal control is contacted through City Hall during business hours.
Your call goes on a waiting list and you are serviced in turn when the messages
are collected. Saretirres the animals are carried in the truck for lengthy
periods during the heat of the day, particularly while officers are 'out of the
trucks having lunch. The LP dog pow1d is sanetirres well cared for and sanetimes
not.

'RESIDENTIAL TAXES. Taxes are based on the appraised value of a hare as determined
by Harris County who also determines whether a hOIrestead exemption is made.
ALL OTHER taxing entities use this basic criteria.
1. County taxes - paid by everyone at the sarre rate, both BayMud and La Porte
2. La Porte ISO (school tax) - paid by everyone at sarre rate regardless of
city limits
3. Local residential taxes - La Porte taxes are 28.2% higher than BayMud.
Same concessions are made for certain cases; the formula used is very complex.
Some taxing authorities recognize the County-granted homestead exemption. BayMud
does not. In case of annexation, the only individuals who would benefit
tax-wise are those aged 65 and over who have a County homestead exemption and
whose home value is appraised at $60,000 or less.
*Harris County Appraisal District. * LPISD tax office. *La Porte City 'fax Ofc,
Also note:. "', fire and ambulance service is supported from BayMud income,
making the tax rates very lo.v indeed.

AMBULANCE SERVICE - Very good response time is reported by BayMud residents who
have needed the service. *Ask them. BayMud residents do not pay individually
for the service. La Porte ambulance service is charged to the individual patient
at a minimum of $100 per trip ($125 if over 10 mi.)

FIRE pROrEcrIrn - ShoreAcres Volunteer Fire Dept. can respond to their area
~ as quickly as LPFD to theirs. The Volunteer Fire Dept. is well equipped and
menbers are continually obtaining additional. formal training to hone their skills,
\4" La Porte has an evening dispatcher on duty, not a crew ready and waiting as
r~has been implied. *Visit La Porte Fire Station-at 2 A.M). ShoreAcres offered
many services and aid to the commw1ity after Alicia, hardly anyone in IP even
saw their fire deparbnent at that time. *Ask them.

-oK POLICE - The exact nurrber of officers to be assigned to l3ayMud after annexation
~ has been left quite vague.Based on current LP manpower and practices it appears
unlikely that BayMud would have any more personnel, numerically, than at present.
It is clear that LP officers rotate areas and would not b€ intimately familiar
with our neighborhoods. It is very comforting to see the officers in our
neighborhoods with their spotlights.. . and they ,know just where to look.

IF WE HAD WISHED TO LIVE IN TI IE CITY \-\IE waJLD HAVE MOVED THERE.
