• <br />~ ,. <br />As indicated in the above table, the total La Porte resident <br />elderly are almost to above the County relationship of 60/over to total <br />population. Because most elderly, low-income persons and handicapped .. <br />persons residing inthe area are on fixed or limited incomes, transporta- <br />tion mobility problems are even more highly severe than in densely popula- <br />ted County Areas. <br />Increasing transportation difficulties is the total lack of public <br />transportation and paucity of feasible alternative transportation services <br />in the La Porte area. The Ia Porte Area residents voted against partici- <br />pation in the regionally conceived Metropolitan Transit Authority. There- <br />fore the low-income, handicapped and elderly are frequently faced to pay <br />outrageous prices to neigborhood residents for transportation service pro- <br />vision. There is limited taxi service, e.g., one major provider, but that <br />provider cannot transport a resident to areas outside La Porte boundaries. <br />The cost of neighborhood resident providers ranges from $10 - $20 per trip <br />and $1.00 ner mile by taxi. <br />F-~ <br />
