6. Impact noise: A transient noise which does not remain at <br />a particular intensity level for a sufficient time to be accu- <br />rately measured on a sound level meter. <br />7. Impact noise analyzer: An impact noise analyzer is an <br />instrument used in conjunction with a sound level meter <br />to measure the peak intensity (in decibels) of a tran- <br />sient noise. <br />8. Ionizing radiation: Gamma rays and x-rays, alpha and <br />beta particles, high speed electrons, neutrons, protons, <br />and other nuclear particles; but not sound or radio waves, <br />or visible, infrared, or ultraviolet light. <br />9. Octave band: A portion of the audible sound spectrum. <br />Octave band analyzers conveniently divide the audible <br />band spectrum into eight (8) octave bands. <br />10. Odorous matter: Any solid, liquid, or gaseous matter <br />including but not limited to gases, vapors, dusts, fumes, <br />and mists which cause •an odor sensation to human beings. <br />11. Octave band analyzer: An instrument used in conjunction <br />with a sound level meter to measure the sound intensity <br />(in decibels) in each of the eight (8) octave bands that <br />make up the significant audible range to which the ear is <br />sensitive. An octave band analyzer that meets applicable <br />requirements of the American Standards Association is <br />suitable for use in determining compliance with this <br />ordinance. <br />12. Particulare matter: Finely divided solid or liquid <br />matter other than water which is released into the <br />atmosphere. <br />13. Ringlemann Chart: A chart as described by the U. S. <br />Bureau of Mines Information Circular 6888 and upon <br />which are illustrated graduated shades of gray for use <br />i~n estimating the light obscuration power of smoke. <br />14. Ringlemann Number: The next lowest shade number on <br />the Ringlemann Chart which most nearly corresponds <br />to the light obscuration power of the smoke being <br />measured. For example, smoke opacity lying between <br />No. 1 and No. 2 shades o~ gray on the Ringlemann <br />Chart will be measured as Ringlemann No. 1 smoke. <br />:~ <br />• <br />
