Second by Councilperson <br />McLaughlin. The motion carried, 8 ayes and 0 nays. <br /> <br />Ayes: <br /> <br />Councilpersons Sutherland, <br />McLaughlin, Porter, Skelton, <br />Malone <br />None <br /> <br />Cooper, Thrower, <br />Clarke and Mayor <br /> <br />Nays: <br /> <br />10. Council received a status report on delinquent tax collection <br />presented by Finance Director Jeff Litchfield. He stated that <br />he found two items that accounted for a jump of 21.5% in <br />outstanding delinquent taxes: (1) there were still accounts <br />on the official roll that should not have been there, and (2) <br />several properties were added to the roll for property that <br />had been omitted in prior years. Difficulty in dealing with <br />the Harris County Appraisal District adds to the problem. The <br />collection rate of current taxes is excellent at this time. <br /> <br />Dexter Joyner, delinquent tax collector for the city of La <br />Porte, addressed Council and agreed with Mr. Litchfield's <br />assessment of the situation. <br /> <br />11. Council received a status report from the City Manager <br />regarding the smoking ordinance. <br /> <br />City Secretary Cherie Black, Fire Marshal Paul Hickenbottom <br />and Chief Building Inspector Ervin Griffith spoke on this <br />matter and outlined plans to enhance the methods of enforcing <br />this ordinance. <br /> <br />12. Council considered awarding a bid for fitness center <br />equipment. <br /> <br />Motion was made bv Counciloerson Skelton to award the bid for <br />fitness center eauioment to Haden Industries in the amount of <br />$30.039.24. Second by Councilperson Cooper. The motion <br />carried, 8 ayes and 0 nays. <br /> <br />Nays: <br /> <br />Councilpersons Sutherland, <br />McLaughlin, Porter, Skelton, <br />Malone <br />None <br /> <br />Cooper, Thrower, <br />Clarke and Mayor <br /> <br />Ayes: <br /> <br />13.
