• <br />• <br />• <br />MINUTES - SPECIAL CALLED MEETING <br />OF THE <br />LA PORTE CITY COMMISSION - LA PORTE, TEXAS <br />AUGUST 8, 1980 <br />Meeting called to order by Mayor Meza at 3:30 P.M. <br />MEMBERS OF THE .CITY COMMISSION PRESENT: Mayor J.J. Meza, <br />Commissioner Simons, Commissioner Malone, Commissioner <br />Cline, Commissioner Kibodeaux. <br />MEMBERS OF THE CITY COMMISSION ABSENT: Commissioner Tom- <br />erlin. <br />OTHER CITY OFFICIALS PRESENT: James R. Hudgens, City Adminis- <br />trator; Betty Waters, City Clerk; Knox Askins, City Attorney; <br />H.F. Freeman, Police Chief; Paul Hickenbottom;;David Paulissen, <br />Chief Inspector, Stan Sherwood, Parks & Recreation; Jerry <br />• Hodge, Public Works Director; Robert Hall, Assistant Police <br />Chief. <br />OTHERS PRESENT: Jim Chapman, Bayshore Sun. <br />Mayor Meza stated this emergency meeting has been called to <br />review hurrican prepardness plans with Civil Defense Coordina- <br />tor and to consider the Proclaimation by Governor Clements for <br />a 14 day postponement of elections to be held on August 9 by <br />cities along the Gulf Coast. <br />City Administrator Hudgens reviewed plans with each Department <br />Head and went over a check list of equipment and supplies. <br />A decision was made by Mayor Meza to hold over 30 public works <br />people and request that they bring their families to the Nutri- <br />tion Center for the duration of the emergency. <br />City Attorney Askins read an Ordinance declaring an emergency <br />due to Hurrican Allen, and postponing the specail charter elec- <br />tion from August 9, 1980 until. August 23, 1980; finding com- <br />pliance with the open meetings law; providing a savings clause; <br />and providing an effective date hereof. <br />Mayor Meza poled the City Commission as to their feelings. <br />• Commissioner Malone stated he felt the election should be de- <br />layed due to the fonfussion and uncertainty the citizens of <br />La Porte find themselves in at the present time. <br />
