<br />e <br /> <br />e <br /> <br />2. 0 BCDI PURPOSE AND HIS'IDRY <br />Bayshore Community Developrent Corporation, incorporated May 8, 1970, <br />represents a not for profit conmmity-based, anti-poverty organization dele- <br />gated by the governing body of Gulf Coast Corrrmmity Services Association <br />(GCCSA). The Economic Opportrmity Act authorized the establishment of Carmul- <br />nity-Based Organizations to carnbat poverty-related neighborhcx::ld conditions and <br />to provide a wide range of services focused on the needs and concerns of <br />low-income and elderly residents. <br />The BCDI Program Service Area includes the primary population centers of <br />La Porte, Baytown, Lomax, Seabrook, Shore Acres and r-brgan' s Point - all locat- <br />ed in the far southeastern quadrant of Harris Cormty. From its inception, <br />BCDI has sponsored many programs addressing the concerns of the elderly and <br />the needy p::>or, rrore recently in providing a Transportation Services Project <br />in the Bayshore Area. <br />This Transportation Services Project increased transportation nobility <br />prirrarily for the elderly, handicapped and low-incorre residents fran July - <br />September 1982, rmder a $50,000 Special Initiative Grant, avmrded by the then- <br />existing Federal Agency, the Commmi ty Services Administration. The Project <br />transported a ridership of 1,835 during the three-nonth period, for approxirmte- <br />ly 6,500 linear miles per rronth. The primary sources of trip generation were <br />rredical facilities, social services (entitlement programs) pharmaceutical faci- <br />lities and shopping areas. Cost incurred for the Project included a one-time <br />$25,000 purchase cost of two (2) fifteen (15) passenger vans. <br />This Proposal represents a potential frmding request for the continuation <br />of that project and possible expanded services for a larger ridership. <br />
