<br />FIRE CODE REVISION <br /> <br />PAGE 5 <br />Article 31- Division 2 -Sec. 31.17 was read and approved as presented: <br />ARTICLE 31: SPECIAL OCCUPANCIES <br />DIVISION SCHOOLS AND EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS (EXCLUDING: COLLEGES, <br />UNIVERSITIES, ETC. <br />L Doors, exits, installation of warning equipment, fire drills in <br />scnools. <br />-~~ Doors and exits: <br />(1) No superintendent, principal, teacher, or other person in charge <br />of any building used for a public, private, or parochial school or <br />any other type educational institution shall either lock or permit <br />to be locked, any exit doors leading from such building during such <br />time a.s said building is occupied. <br />(2) All exit doors leading from schools or educational institutions <br />shall open outward and be equipped with approved panic hardware. <br />(b) Installation of .warning equipment. The superintendent, principal, <br />teacher, or any other person in charge of maintenance in a public, private, <br />or parochial school or any other educational institution shall erect, install, <br />and maintain in good condition any and all required illuminated exit signs. <br />The required fire alarm system in a public, private, parochial school or any <br />other educational institution shall be installed as per N.F.P.A. standards and <br />inter-corniected with all buildings on campus. The abovementianed fire alarm <br />system shall be independent in sound from and not cocmected to the class bell <br />change system. Maintenance and inspection of the fire alarm system shall be <br />done by a fire alarm installation superintendent with a current license issued <br />by the State Fire Marshal. All new fire alarm systems must be tested and <br />approved by the La Porte Fire Marshal or his designated representative prior to <br />the time such building is occupied by students. <br />(c) Fire drills <br />(1) The superintendent, principal, teacher or person in charge of <br />any public, private , or parochial school or educational institution <br />shall prepare a plan of evacuation of the building which is approved <br />by the Fire Marshal or his designated representative to be used in <br />event of fire and shall post such plan of evacuation in every class- <br />room where it is clearly visible and shall be responsible, furthermore <br />that every teacher and student occupying such building is thoroughly <br />indoctrinated in the evacuation procedure. <br />(2) The Fire Marshal or his designated representative is authorized <br />to enter any public, private, or parochial school or other educational <br />institution at any time without notice and conduct a fire drill. <br />(3) It shall be the duty of the superintendent, principal, teacher, <br />or other person in charge pf any public, private, or parochial school <br />or educa.tianal institution to hold one classroom and one assembly <br />fire drill each month and make written reports thereof to the Fire <br />Marshal at the end of each month or part thereof that such school is <br />in session, giving the time and date each fire drill is held during <br />the mrmth. <br />(4) All students in any public, private, or parochi.a.l school building <br />or any other educational institution shall immediately leave the <br />school building upon the sounding of a fire alarm in accordance with <br />the evacuation plan prepared for the school. <br />(d) Delay in sounding alarm is prohibited. No superintendent principal, <br />teacher, or other person in charge of any public, private, or parochial school <br />or other educational institution shall cause or permit any delay in sounding of <br />fire alarm or evacuation of the building when receiving a signal from any auto- <br />matic or manual fire alarm station. <br />
