<br />'F" <br /> <br />1. Concrete and Unit Masonry Surfaces Scheduled to Receive Paint Finish: Remove dirt, <br />loose mortar, scale, salt or alkali powder, and other foreign matter. Remove oil and <br />grease with a solution oftri-sodium phosphate; rinse well and allow to dry. Remove <br />stains caused by weathering of corroding metals with a solution of sodium <br />metasillicate after thoroughly wetting with water. Allow to dry. <br /> <br />J. Ferrous Metals: Clean nongalvanized ferrous-metal surfaces that have not been shop <br />coated; remove oil, grease, dirt, loose mill scale, and other foreign substances. Use <br />solvent or mechanical cleaning methods that comply with recommendations of the <br />Steel Structures Painting Council. <br />1. Before power tool cleaning, remove visible oil, grease. Soluble welding residues <br />and salts by the methods outlined in SSPC-SP1. <br />2. Power tool clean steel surfaces as recommended by the paint system manufacturer <br />and in accordance with requirements ofSSPC specification SSPC-SP 3. <br />3. Treat bare or pickled clean metal with a metal treatment wash coat before <br />pnmmg. <br />4. Touch up bare areas and shop-applied prime coats that have been damaged. Wire- <br />brush, clean with solvents recommended by the paint manufacturer, and touch up <br />with the same primer as the shop coat. <br /> <br />K. Galvanized Surfaces: Clean galvanized surfaces with non-petroleum-based solvents <br />so that the surface is free of oil and surface contaminants. Remove pretreatment from <br />galvanized sheet metal fabricated from coil stock by mechanical methods. <br /> <br />L. Interior Wood Items Scheduled to Receive Paint Finish: Wipe off dust and grit prior <br />to priming. Seal knots, pitch streaks and apply sections with sealer. Fill nail holes <br />and cracks after primer has dried; sand between coats. <br /> <br />M. Shop Primed Steel Surfaces: Sand and scrape to remove loose primer and rust. <br />Feather edges to make touch-up patches inconspicuous. Clean surfaces with solvent. <br />Prime base steel surfaces. <br /> <br />N. Exterior Wood Scheduled to Receive Paint Finish: Remove dust, grit, and foreign <br />matter. Seal knots, pitch streaks and sappy sections. Fill nail holes with tinted <br />exterior caulking compound after prime coat has been applied. <br /> <br />O. Metal Doors Scheduled for Painting: Seal top and bottom edges with primer. Touch- <br />up damaged shop primed surfaces. <br /> <br />3.3 APPLICATION <br /> <br />A.
